Default '97 Reg. cab, 2.3 I-4 5 speed

I've owned this Ranger for 8 years and now have 188,000 miles on it! I installed step bars, tonneau cover, Euro tail-kights, custom grill and upgraded stereo. Fun to drive and great mileage. Now I'm at a cross road. It needs some work, probably over $1K worth. Will this engine last me to 250,00 or more? Is it worthwhile to invest the money in a truck I really like, or better to upgrade to a newer one? I changed the timing belt at 60K and 120K...do I really need to change this expensive belt? I understand this engine is an "inversion" engine and won't get damaged if the belt goes. Can anyone confirm this? Looking forward to some sound advice. Thanx. Bill
