Default Sloan with a few question

Hey guys,
Just thought I would say hello and thanks in advance for any help.

I have a few general quesitons as I am just looking at the moment at a 2003 ford ranger edge 4x4 auto. This particular one has about 160,000km (yes I am canadian). Are there any problems I should look for or be aware of when looking at a ranger.

thanks,
Sloan

There are many reports of the 4x4 system (shift on the fly) going faulty with time. Normally the issue is the know in your dash and the electrical system. Some Ranger Auto trannys have shown signs of weaknesses (but most automatic trannys do at high mileage). All in all the Ranger is a pretty simplistic truck and are pretty reliable.

well it feels pretty tight the tranny seems to be good, no noticeable slippage. Just need it to get me through the rest of my degree and I will be good to go and with that many km im sure I will be fine. any other thoughts? what mileage are people beginning to see issues with their autos? this one is tight and was owned by an older gentlemen so I am fairly confident it wasnt driven too hard.

Could you post the engine 3L or 4L and the other specs of the truck? would help. well I have seen members post Auto issues at approx 200,000 Miles (not Kms) if there are issues before hand, perhaps someone else would be off more help. The 3L could have some issues off blown headgaskets, but that doesnt mean all of them do. Many love their 3L and they can run for long periods of time its hit or miss really. but most are really reliable.

welcome to FRF, Sloan!
I have a 2001 ranger edge, which is the same as a 2003.
I have the 4.0L SOHC and has held up great! even the shift on the fly 4x4 system has never had any problems.

Well since my mileage is calculated in Canadian MPG, I think it will answer your question. I am averaging 18-19MPG for city driving and have had 24 MPG for highway in the winter. I do have a 2wd so it is better on fuel economy then the 4x4 because of the weight difference and the Diff ratio difference.

my Ranger edge 4x4 gets around 15 mpg due to my 32's and steel wheels. however, dealers invoice listed mpg at 15 city, 19 hwy.
