Smile To the Ranger Owners

Two firsts joining a forum and owning a Ford Ranger. Lots to be said for these mid-sized trucks. I bought this 2008 yesterday (3-8-11). It has low mileage, a dark gray body, chrome wheels (something I wouldn't pay a penny for, but they look good) and a crappy bed liner that I'll be taking out. This will be a small-farm-like work truck. It's going to get used and hopefully not abused too much. I owned an F-150 years ago. The thing never had a bad day and may still be on its "feet" for all I know. The thing that may be a problem is that the truck lives in Maine and a 2 x 4 is not ideal for this climate. What exactly is a 2 x 4 anyway? I think only one rear wheel gets power, right?

Tis good to be amongst you all!

WELCOME TO FRF!

A 2x4 is a dimension of lumber, a 4x2 is a truck or suv that is only two wheel drive. In the Ranger's case, only the back wheels get power, so you are correct. As far as the climate, I'm from Michigan, and my 2wd does just fine in the snow, just drive sensible and have good tires and weight in the back.

right, 4 x 2, and thanks for the driving tip. This is the first non AWD I've driven here. I don't get why it's called a 4 x 2, though, unless it's limited slip differential, which I don't think this one is; it acts more like a 4 x 1....

Welcome to FRF

You can look at the door sticker and match the number up with the chart in the drictrain section to see what the rear axle is.

4x2 = 4 wheels x 2 wheels with power

4x4= 4 wheels x 4 w power

6x2 (example): 6 wheelsx 2 with power

thats why its called 4x2 or 2 wheel drive or 2wd lol

----------

ditto on the door jamb though to check ur axle, some people have limited slip which is better
