Default Looking for a Ranger, thought I'd ask the experts

Hey, just thought I'd drop in and introduce myself!

I don't have a Ranger yet, but am in the market for a new truck and have narrowed it down to a couple, this being on the top of the list. Tacoma and Dakota are in the running, but don't have quite the same appeal to me for various reasons... plus these trucks just seem awesome.

Basically, I'm not commuting like I used to so I don't need an economy car anymore... I'd like something to haul toys around on occasion (I've had to turn down more than one broken down motorcycle because I couldn't get it to my place!) I like to do whatever mechanical work on my vehicles that I have access to, which is growing but still very limited. Here's my thinking:

Won't buy without category:
Manual transmission

Nice to have category:
A/C
Extended cab
4WD
V6
Small lift kit/oversize tires/brush guard/light rack/blacked out/gun rack/anything that makes the truck a truck

I'll poke around on the forum to learn more and look through the classifieds, but is there anything that I pay attention to in my search for a new Ranger? Edit: I'm in the $6k max category, so can't get anything super clean or new...

Look for the 4.0 motor, lots more power, also depending on the year range you want there are 2 types of suspension in the front, 98 and newer have the new stuff. Also look into the gearing that it has and if its a limited slip. Some of the other things to look for are the fold down seats in the back, and tow packages.

Haha, machine, does that thing time travel at 8.8 mph?

4.0 SOHC, noted. You guys probably know all this stuff, but I'm very new to trucks in general. Seems the 4.0 gives more power at a very little mpg expense. Sounds good to me!

And I've been looking at the 98+ model year range in general...

if u want the SOHC, you have to go 2001+. I would personally look for 2003 plus as some 01s i beieve had a timing chain rattle.

IF you can find a mice FX4 Level II for a decent price, i would go that route as they are top of the line.

Welcome to FRF

Manual transmissions on some years have issues with the slave cylinder.

Yeah I like the front end on the 01 and up personally. The 00 and previous yeahs have more torque, the newer 4.0 motors have more hp.

Patrick (01_ranger_4x4) said that he cannot tell a difference in torque between the two models. he said his SOHC straight pulls, i can verify that with my 4.0 SOHC

Ok, so seems like slave cylinder will be an issue with all the year trucks I'm looking at ('98 and newer). I'm not really buying the truck for towing a whole lot (I'd go f-150 automatic if that were my goal). I have motorcycles for going fast off the line, so differences in torque are minor... although 4.0L v6 are quickly becoming a favorite...

From what I'm reading 01-02 have some timing chain issues, is this common enough to avoid, or just one of those risks of buying a vehicle?

And thanks for the welcomes!

Some more about me:

I'm living and working in Tempe, AZ right now and graduated with a degree in Industrial Design two years ago. So I design stuff. I'm starting to get my hands dirty- never really had the opportunity or means to work on anything mechanical before I graduated, but am quickly learning to love the garage and am excited to have something that would be fun to tinker on. My current car is a sedan and is one of those cars that I'll forget as soon as I off it haha.

If you look long enough you will find one that meets your needs. I just bought an 04 edge 4x4 5spd with the 4.0 and i paid under 10k for it. You just have to keep searching.

Just one of those risks. But not everyone has that problem. There are plenty of people that have them and never jave any issues.

Also even though ur not into towing a lot, the 4.0 V6 is rated for almost 6k.

They have 207HP and 238 ft-lbs ot torque I believe. If u get an fx4 or fx4 level 2, they come with limited slip. 02 manuals got manual t-cases as well.
