Default in desperate need of help!!!!

I have a 99 ranger 3.0 and its been running fine until I went in the store came out turned the key and all it did was click. First instinct battery or battery connections so I replaced both. 7 out of 10 times it will make a clicking noise the other 3 times no noise at all. So I replaced the starter and same thing. Replaced the starter relay and still nothing. Took a test light and am getting power to the starter itself. So I took the new starter off and took the new and old one to have them tested and they are both good but the sales associate said it looked like the old one was taking a lot more amps to engage the solenoid. So I put the old one back in since it still worked. There is not a second solenoid on the firewall. I'm now stuck and out of ideas and desperate for help. I need ideas. I also need to know exactly how to jump the starter with battery cables so I can get it out of the parking lot. Please help!!!!

See page 139-140 of your manual for the underhood power distrobution box....

Relay #6 is the starter relay. Second from the top right. Square relay.
Fuse #5 is the ignitio/start circuit. Bottom left maxi fuse.

Check both of those. Swap the relay too with the one next to it as well to make sure. Also, make sure the ground wire from the battery to the body isn't shot.

I'm not sure of its exact routing on a '99. But if you look at the battery's negative clamp there should be a big wire or wires going to a bolt on the body or frame or both.

When you turn the key to start, does the relay in the power distro box click?
When you turn the key to start, does the big relay on the starter click?

If you can't get It started, get a buddy or two to help roll start it just so you can get it home..

its a automatic. the truck isnt here yet but i know it clicks at the relay box. not sure about the starter yet. my friend checked the ground with a test light and he said it was good. the starter was clicking when i turned the key but ive probably tried to start with no change about 20 times, and now i think its only clicks one at the relay box and then silence. thanks for your concern i really appreciate it.

Hook some jumper cables up to another vehicle to charge your battery up first things first. You can't troubleshoot anything if it is dead. Then re-examine what is clicking and what isn't clicking. In fact, do this WITH the jumper cables still hooked up and running so you know you have good power. It would suck if all this is over a dead battery.

The electrons flow in this order:

Battery > Power Distro Box Fuse #5 > Key switch > Power Distro Box Relay > Small wire going to the starter's built-in big ass relay.

Then there is also the big red wire going from the battery to starter's built-in big ass relay.

If only the power distro box relay is clicking, check that little wire going to the starter to see if its disconnected. If they both click, then it could be the big red wire going to the battery which is the primary power to the starter. You can hokey pokey a bypass from the battery to where that red wire connects to the starter. That way your using your known good jumper cable instead of the big red wire. If it starts, you have your problem.

Connecting that jumper cable to the other big lug on the starter would compeltely bypass all the relays and directly power the starter motor. If it can crank, it will crank. Caution/warning/danger/cuidado/achtung You're handling unfused, unprotected power that will crank your engine with you under the truck. Set the emergency brake and chock the wheels. I recommend you do this with a second person too.

If it STILL won't start with everything bypassed, your motor might just be siezed or hydrolocked.

so just the positive side on the battery cable should be hooked to the big post on the starter and then the positive side of the battery and the starter will at least start clicking even if it doesnt start correct? do i turn the key to the on position or is there no need in that? if the engine is siezed or hydrolocked am i looking at a new engine? sure hope you dont say yes!
