Default Newbie

My name is Dave and I am a Ranger addict. I have owned three since the early 90's. The first two were leases and my newest was purchased new in Sept 2001 and has a little over 205K miles on her. She's a Silver Regular cab XLT 2x4 with the 2.3L and a 5 speed manual gearbox, No power anything because that means fewer things to break. I run Amsoil in the engine, gearbox, rear end, and power steering. The brakes have been flushed with ATE DOT 4 Super Blue or Amber every two years with the cooling system flushed on the off year. Yes, I am anal about maintenance.
Last week the Cruise Control pod snapped off and I came here to find out how to replace. There were several great threads and it seemed pretty straight forward. After taking it apart, I just fixed the old one and slapped it in place tonight. It was in good shape and the lights worked so I thought if this worked I can put the money towards some more brake fluid I just super glued the ears in place to hold them while I marked up a couple of washers to grind down. I then used JB weld to laminate the washer(s) to the top of the ear(s). You can't put them on the back because of support ribs and the locating rings. I had to grind down a little plastic tab on the top one, but it didn't interface with anything, so off it went. If you do this make sure the ears are glued on correctly by trial fitting it back in the steering wheel as there is a locating ring on each ear. It might even be easier to leave the broken pieces in the wheel and glue it in place, like it was a fixture? The original screws still worked and had about 4 threads of engagement.
I have attached a couple of pics of the pod with the mod.
Great forum guys - keep posting
By the way, I have had other things break, but usually could figure out how to fix. Airbags are kind of scary to mess with!

Dave

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I'm not much of a forum poster, more of a lurker. No coma here! In the past I have found great threads in the FRF on fixing just about anything that went wrong with my Ranger. Usually it was typical stuff and I didn't do anything that was different than the rest of the group here. This fix, which I had not seen posted, could save somebody a couple of bucks if the pod was in good shape otherwise. I will get a couple of pictures of her up this weekend even though she is plain Jane.
Great site guys (and ladies)

Dave
