Default New member with Questions!

Hi there!

I am looking to buy an older Ranger to convert into a camping truck.
My plan is to travel around the US sleeping in the back.

So I am looking for something with good gas mileage and a larger bed to fit a camper shell on.

I found a 1994 Ford Ranger on creigslist with 230k miles on it.

I am meeting the owner tomorrow to take a look at it and to have a mechanic do a checkup. I do have some money budgeted for repair and ideally would get it in good condition before embarking.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if its plausible to drive a truck with this mileage around the US for a few years without it falling apart on me.

I have heard Rangers are trustworthy and great to own and I am looking forward to any help that can be offered!

Thanks!

it sounds like an adventure, but how many miles are you planning on putting on it? anything with that many miles is gonna start having some issues, but rangers are good little trucks, and they do run for a looooong time usually. what are the stats on the truck?

Welcome, Its hard to give you one answer to your question. Will a truck with 230k make it that far? Sure but it depends on the actual truck. I guess it would all come down to what your going to pay for it and how much work needs to be done to it. Depending on your size and the fact that you want to sleep in it you may want to try and find a long bed Ranger. They are a little harder to find but it might be better for you. Rangers are GREAT & Reliable trucks but a truck with that many miles all depends on how previous owner(s) cared for it.

Thanks for your replies!

The guy who I am talking with says that the truck was purchased with tranny issues that are apparently fixed...

He sounds like he knows what he is talking about but I am going to see it tomorrow and get a quote on the work that may need to be done.

I am going to try to get it for $800 and I would like to spend no more than $2500 by the end of this.

The reason he is selling it is that it was vandalized and all the windows were smashed. I called a glass shop and they said they could give me all new windows for about $600.

Like I said I am also planning on putting a shell on it which I am planning on spending no more than 200 for.

This leaves me with enough capital to do some repairs and get it road ready again.

Ideally I would like to put at least 150-200k more on it before trashing the truck.

So I guess what I am wondering is if I get all the work done before I leave, you think I can circumvent much trouble on the road?

Sounds like you got a pretty good plan. I wouldn't go any further until you get your hands on it and can see it with your own eyes. You may want to check some junk yards for windows, could potentially save you a lot of money.
