Default New ranger shopper & forum member from san diego ca.
I am currently shopping for my 1st RANGER. My needs are for a small
pick-up for personal use. I suspect that it will never haul a load heavier than you would put into the trunk of your family sedan. This little truck will have an easy life during my ownership. Being a senior citizen and living in a city will ensure that. Being "OLD SHCOOL" (V8 minded) I'm unsure of the 4cly. engines. The V6 engines are more to my liking. Shagging grocerys and other short runs with the occasional fishing trip to the local lakes will be about it. I do have one question to ask== "does the RANGER come with some sort of "posi. traction, locker diff." or other type(name) of rear end?? If so, what engine, trans.,mod. and year do i look for. If the answer is NO then, is this type of gearing avail. in the after market??

Welcome James,look here for axle codes http://www.fordrangerforum.com/drive...xle-codes.html I"M also looking for a traction lock diff but I have to wait till my warranty runs out before installing one.Summit racing is a good place to start.

welcome james, i know where your coming from being an "old school" V8 guy myself, but don't count out the 4 cyl's, i have a 06 with the 2.3L in it, and that thing is quick

There were some models that came from factory with a limited slip. You can also get a factory limited slip on ebay for fairly cheap out of older mustangs. Just depends on which axle you get.

I quite like my 2.3L DOHC, I load my truck up more than some people, and I have no issues with it being a 4 cylinder! From the sound of what you're using it for, the 4 might be better. But! Thats all personal preference.
