Default 89 Ranger for my son

Just bought a used 89 Ranger for my son with the 2.9L v6. It has a little over a 100,000 miles on it. Any suggestions on things to look for?

The Constant Velocity piece on the driveshaft, it will be a rubber piece right behind the transmission that the driveshaft bolts onto. My dad just had to have a u-joint put into his because his was coming apart. That's all I can think of.

Thanks guys! For 400$ I thought my son found a pretty good little project vehicle.

The truck needs some cosmetic work. A paint job for sure. There's a little damage to the bed where you can tell they had a rock come up and hit the bottom of the bed in an off road adventure. My son wants to start sanding the truck down.

One thing I need to do is take out the radiator and boil it out or remove and replace. This guy didn't take great care of the truck. Do you guys have how to sticky threads with photos? How to remove and repair type stuff? What years are these trucks compatible with? We might be doing a little pick and pull!

I'm concerned about all the cracked head talk on these forums. The truck didn't over heat on the drive back home after the purchase. We changed the oil right away. It looks like that wasn't done in forever. How can I tell if there is a cracked head? Truck fires up real nice. I didn't notice any snot in the oil.

here's what an 87 looks like.Wasn't 89's boxier looking tho n cheap grills but it can look similar if you stay original with it most everything will cross except most body stuff i think.

The fenders and grille parts aren't the same between those years. Everything else (body parts) is real similar or the same.

The piece on the tailgate is stainless and very expensive to buy new.

I've never seen ANY constant velocity piece on a rear driveshaft in 89. Same goes for the front driveshaft.

If you're concerned about a cracked head then look under the oil cap. If there's snot there, then you have a problem.

Why are you concerned about the radiator? What's happening with it?

Ok, My dad and I just had to fix his '88, and I thought the '89 may have had the same since it still had the 2.9. Thanks for the info though.

I've owned an 86, 88, 89 and none of them ever had any kind of constant velocity piece on any driveshaft.. Maybe the extended cabs have something? Mine were all regular cabs.

Or do you mean the carrier bearing for the two piece rear drive shaft??
