Default 1996 Ranger 4 cyl

It looks like at my age I'm new to this sight. I recently had my 2000 Windstar get caught up in Ford's rear axle recall. Since it was cracked & I had over 213,000 miles on it & a little rust they decided to buy it back from me & a good price. Since I used it not only for transportation but for hauling parts & stuff for the hot rod I'm building. I couldn't afford anything to new or big & I came across this fairly clean 1996 XLT with extended cab, 2.3l 4 cyl. & a 5 speed again at a real reasonable price so I bought it. It's no ball of fire but it is descent on gas will haul what I need.
I just installed a new "all" aluminum radiator replacing the plastic one that always leaks when it gets cold out. It was not cheap but does not leak regardless of the temp. out. The only problem I have now is that without blocking off most of the radiator I get no heat. I have blocked off all but 2 small 5" circles in order to get some heat & the temp gauge to come off cold. I'll have to experiment with the amount to block off later.
Hopefully the Ranger will last until I get my hot rod done, it already has 166,000 miles on it.
Here are the photos of the Ranger with all the road salt in the world on it.

I have always been able to get good heat out of the Ranger but going to the all aluminum 2 core radiator is proving to be to much cooling for winter even with a new 192' thermostat. I am getting heat out of it now, I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator & cut 2 small 5" circles out. Now the temp gauge & heat are back to normal & I have plenty of heat. I want to replace the really rusty thermostat housing soon but now at least I should be able to wait until it is a little warmer.

Ive never heard of an engine that can't get hot enough lol. Is the new radiator bigger and requires more coolant? I am sure you know this, but I have to ask just in case.

Besides being all aluminum, which dissipates heat faster than the factory plastic & aluminum, the side tanks are some what larger & it is a 2 core rather than a 1 core so yes it does take more coolant but I always thought that even with a larger radiator if the thermostat is working it should keep at least the engine warm. I suppose it is possible that the aftermarket t-stat could be bad & be stuck wide open & I will address that issue when it gets warmer & I can afford to replace the really rusty t-stat housing but for now the temp gauge goes to the same position it did before & I have heat with no leaks, I'm happy for now. I know a couple of the group would like to see photos of the Ranger & if it is nice out this weekend I will try to take & post some.

After running the truck with the new radiator & cardboard block I'm finding that it heats like it used to & the temp gauge still only goes as high as the low mark on the gauge. I have a new t-stat housing to replace the really rusty one it has but I want to replace the sending unit also just to be sure. I'd also like to install a pair of mechanical gauges to be more accurate for the water temp & oil pressure but I don't know if there is another place to install the gauge sensor for the temp gauge, back to the books. With replacing the worn out stock cat with a new bolt right in one from Magnaflow & 2 new O2 sensors my gas mileage has been up to 22mpg, that's up from the 19mpg I got before I started making changes. I just ordered a new Flowmaster muffler & will be replacing that & the rear speed sensor when I replace the leaking rear axle seals & brake shoes. I'm going to try the Lucas synthetic diff. lube & later trans. fluid to see if I can pick up a little mpg. I'm interested in what it will do on a trip. Here's hoping I can get this done before it warms up enough to start again on my hot rod.
