Default Trigamma, new member, aging p/u falling apart

Hello All,

I have a 1996 4x4 5 sp that I use mainly for work and traveling in bad weather. It has 180,000 miles on it now and in last month I have replaced universal joints in front, replaced On The Fly 4x4 with manual ones, new tires. Driving on the freeway last night a loud thumping started from under front end every time I accelerated so I took it back to tire shop and they infromed me by voicemail the throw-out bearing is bad. What is that and how exspensive? I love my p/u But, I need to know if its worth it to keep putting money in to keep it running or get another one.

Welcome from the Travelin' PNW Crewman! I live down in Centralia, and I'm working out in Tennessee.

You're throw out bearing is in your transmission. It helps you engage and disengage the clutch. Throw out bearings are cheap, the labor isn't. And while they are in there you might as well have them do a clutch.

Red face Re: Trigamma, new member, aging p/u falling apart

Thank you all for warm welcomes and RicharddHoward about advice on throw-out bearing. Took it to transmission shop and turns out its the rear differential, so they will replace that and the clutch since its apart anyway. I hope its worth it to keep this truck.

Haha rear ends are much cheaper! They really are good trucks, I've owned 5 different trucks, and driven probably 100 different trucks. The Ranger has been one of the best of any of them. I was a GM truck buyer first, and I still am a GM buyer, but these trucks are definately good trucks.
