To fix it, the engine has to come out of the truck. not too fun. However, I don't regret buying my truck at all. It has great power, good mileage, it rides nice, and its an all around blast to drive. The tacomas from before 2005 had a smaller v6 (3.4), less powerful, but got the same mpg as a 4.0 Ranger, and they can't tow as much, not to mention they're generally more expensive. Ford knows better than anyone how to build a truck, you won't be disappointed at all with a Ranger. good luck!
thanks for scaring him off...lol jk. if you get say an 03, shouldnt have that problem. you may/may not get it with 01-02, depends on the truck. i wouldn't NOT buy a truck because of this its like playing the lottery

you quoted while i was editing it lol. It can be on 02s too. one of the reasons i think is because the SOHC was new to the ranger and that is one of its bugs that had to be worked out

Thanks for the tip on the chain. I won't get scared off easily; the only two real options are the Tacoma and the Ranger. The Taco is way more expensive for less truck, and is really costly to repair. A friend of mine had his Tacoma's engine block crack, and a new engine cost him nearly $4k! The Ranger is more common, and parts seem more readily available.

Dixie - that red one on autotrader is awesome! That's exactly what I'm looking for. I've been watching CL and have seen most of the ones you posted... Most you pasted aren't fully fitting to my criteria though (see first post).

For me to buy today, it has to be under $4500... Under $10k, I can do once my Civic sells (just posted it today).

I've looked at one of the ones you posted (it was a red one, nice but it was from VA and was a rustbucket).

I am calling about this one now: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/2108634164.html, I hadn't seen it yet, looks good. EDIT: just called, no answer, left a message...

hahah yeah let me restate: it is minor for sure, my truck is an early 02, it and the engine have a fall 2001 build date, so that's why I have it. But like I said, it won't kill the truck or anything, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one at all. The only reason I brought it up is I wish I had known about it before I bought mine, because I started freaking out once I realized what it was, turns out it was just a bunch stress for nothing. I could have used it as a bargaining chip in negotiations lol. Definitely don't run away just because of that, its not a big deal at all. The Ranger is a bulletproof design and they will literally run forever if you take decent care of them.

The 2001 chain drive issue may be a non-issue. I'm meeting the guy who owns the Ranger in my previous post tomorrow. Since it is a 1998, no worries about that issue (though I'm sure there are more to look for). I know the usual things to look for on a car / truck when inspecting it to buy it, but is there anything I should look for in specific on the Ranger?

Thanks again for all the help; you guys are quick and helpful.

no problem. yeah i was just going through the listings and looking at pics and skimming the prices as compared to the pics . I didnt really like that gray one. For one, if it was a real nice truck, the owner would have taken a better pic of the truck.

on a side note, when you see V6, make sure it has the 4.0L V6 and NOT the 3.0 Vulcan V6. Pre 2001 rangers will have 4.0 OverHead Valve (OHV) engine which is ok. But the 2001+ get the 4.0 SOHC which IMO is a better engine.

That red one would be first on my list no matter what man. it looks clean and taken care of. More than likely that truck has limited slip as well

look at the rearend where the driveshaft goes into rear end and see if it looks wet around it like oil. if so then it has a rear pinion seal leak this seems to be a minor problem on ford 8.8 rearends. easy fix (45 min fix, $8 fix). but that could be a price point. also open the rad cap and make sure its not brown under there. when you drive it, make sure to get in gravel or grass and engage the 4x4. the 4x4 light should come on in the dash and when you turn it hard you will feel it stiffen up. you dont want to buy a 4x4 and find out the 4x4 doesnt work when you need it :/ im not saying these are definite problems, just ones i have encountered.

that is all i can think of other than routine new car walkaround (oil check, tire check, etc...)
