Default New Potential Ranger Owner

Hi, I'm a 17-year-old girl from Virginia. I have a lifted/fairly modded Jeep Wrangler right now, and I'm looking at buying a '95 Ranger I found. It was in a front-end accident a few days ago, but (according to the seller) everything is in good working order, it runs and drives, and there is no frame damage. From the photos I saw it looks like it hit a pole/tree at a pretty low speed. It supposedly only needs a new bumper and grille. I figure that since I'm capable of doing work on my Jeep (I installed a lift on it myself) and have some friends with more knowledge than I do, it shouldn't be hard to grab the parts from a junkyard and get the truck fixed up pretty quickly and cheaply.

So I'm hoping I could get a little advice from the gurus here about what to look out for. Aside from obvious radiator and frame damage, is there anything I should specifically be concerned about when I go take a look at this truck? Are there any things that are common issues on this model/year or that would be likely to have been damaged in the accident?

Also, assuming there are no hidden damages, I think I'm getting a good deal. It's $650 firm for a 1995 Ranger XLT 4 cylinder 5 speed manual 2wd with 120K miles. I'll probably eventually wind up reselling it, so what price should I expect it to go for once it's fixed up? Of course, I've always wanted a Ranger, so I might have a hard time giving it up down the road.

And since I don't have any pics of the Ranger to show yet, he's a pic of my Jeep!

I doubt you would get enough more to bother with. That's assuming you are going to tell potential buyers about the damage you fixed. Go for it if you want to keep it. Possibly to hone your skills you may accept this and not be out to make a big profit.

Here is a link to the Kelley Blue Book to check the values of whatever including that Ranger. Would have gone farther,..but it will ask for a zip code since values vary depending on location.

Thanks. I figure since I'd like to have one anyway, I won't be that disappointed if I get to drive it around for a few months then break even on the resale. I did check the KBB and it said it will go for $1500 in fair condition.

I'd say go for it! And welcome to the FRF from the Travelin' PNW Crewman, just down the road in TN. These trucks are really not hard to work on. I think the biggest PITA will be if you have to do a core support on it. They are a PITA to lower in that year too. But otherwise I'd say that'd be a good way to go.

I paid 5800 for my 97 two years ago, but I also have all the goodies and it had 30200 miles on her. It all depends on what you got.

Was power steering standard on '95s, or is that something I should ask about?

Should be standard as far as I know

Well then do it. Power steering standard or optional...probably was standard. By 95 only something like a Skoda may still have had that as an option...along with any form of comfort things. I think they did have roll down, actual glass windows by then in the top of the line Skoda's anyway.

Ok awesome. Stuff like power windows/locks and A/C I don't care about (my Jeep doesn't have any of that crap!), but no power steering might be a dealbreaker -- I'm not that strong!

Haha I agree. I always hate taking my baby on long drives. I can just hear the asphalt eating up my tires! Not to mention it's kind of terrifying to drive on the highway. And anyway, I'd like to learn how to fix this up. And I'd love to have some better fuel economy -- what kind of MPGs does a Ranger like this usually get?

Yeah, the more I think about it, this truck's worth getting even if I don't make much of a profit selling it. I love Rangers, so I'm really excited about getting one.

Mmm asphalt eating tires...NOT. As for mpgs as long as you keep the maintenance up, this truck should get 25 or so. I can't remember of the top of my head what the guys on here said it would get. I get 25 out of my 4 cylinder GMC Sonoma, I know Rob with an 02 (FoMoCo) has seen up to 32.2 mpg but he also has the newer updated 4 cylinder then the 95's.
