Considering I got 15 MPG last time I calculated, that's actually a pretty big improvement!

Yeah, you guess well. I know my Jeep has its shortcomings -- it's horrible on gas, no power at all, top speed of 73, terrifying to drive on the highway, and it has hardly any cargo space; but there's nothing more fun than edging up just an inch away from the bumper of the guy who just passed you on the shoulder at a stop light and revving it. Plus I can yell at him on my PA system! The Jeep has a wonderful intimidation factor. And of course offroad it's unstoppable.

Gears might do something, but it's a 4-banger, and you can only make the little gerbils run so fast . . .

And the short wheelbase has its' advantages off road allowing such to deal with tighter turns in the woods, and negotiating certain types of ditch-like situations, etc. A friend bought a new CJ-5 in around 1977. Back then you had a choice of CJ-5 or CJ-7...the 7 had a longer wheelbase. He opted for a small V-8. That Jeep could do amazing things in a gravel pit,..but he rolled it more than once in time probably due to the short wheelbase. But it had a stock-for real roll bar. Cool too was the interior being all metal with 1 inch diameter holes in the floor to literally hose the interior clean.

Re: New Potential Ranger Owner
Yeah, the short wheelbase has saved my ass in some situations. It's also a big part of why the Jeep is so awful on the highway.
The great thing about these Jeeps is that 20-30 years later all those awesome things about the CJ are still around. Mine still has a real stock roll cage (and it's actually safer than the one that came in CJs -- the rear passengers don't get crushed!) and they still have metal interiors with holes in the floorboards to hose them down. Why they failed to put a drain hole in the lowest point of the tub is beyond me, though. I really need to take a drill to that . . .

I actually have 6 guinea pigs sitting behind me right now. I don't think they'd appreciate getting thrown in an engine, though.
If that little four-banger ever dies, I'm definitely going to drop in a diesel.

Re: New Potential Ranger Owner
well we have both g pigs and gerbils, the gerbils are very fast and although they seem friendly we dont handle them because they are so quick and jump about and i am worried they will escape! however they are very entertaining and great at recycling, we put lots of cardboard boxes in the tank which they love to chew up, they chew every thing and dig tunnels which the kids love watching, we have them in a tank not a cage as when they dig the mess goes every where and if they are in a tank they can have more sawdust to dig in.
gpigs are much easier to handle although they are very nervouse creatures to begin with but once you start to handle them on a regular basis they become quite tame, i have never been bitten by a gpig, they talk (squeak) loads and when we had them indoors they would squeak every time the fridge dooor opend as they thought it was veggie time!! they love to have a run on grass and squeak happily as they do it, they also like tunnels or boxes to hide in in their run as they are timid and because they like to run in and out of them. they love all kinds of veggies, salad and fruit and need some each day as they can't produce vitamen c, they also eat dried food. you need to keep them in pairs as they are social animals and hate being on their own.
if it were me i would go for gpigs as they are easier for children to handle. we also have to bunnies one of which never has become tame and the other who is so soppy she comes and sits by you waiting to be stroked!
A quick search turned that up.
