New here, been lurking for a few weeks. Just bought a 99 Ranger XLT with extended cab, suicide doors, V6, and a 5 speed manual.
I have a new Jeep SUV that work gives me (they buy me a new one every 2 or 3 years) and a little beemer that I let my girlfriend drive most of the time...but I wanted a little truck so I could pull a trailer and get out into the woods and cut wood and hunt. I choose a Ranger because I have known a few people that had them and loved them. My GF's dad has an old step side 5 speed with 270K miles and still running strong...
It's been a few weeks since I bought it and I have started to fall in love with the little guy. Been using it to haul wood and hunt since bow season has come in...So, I am going to put a little money and elbow grease into fixing the little guy up a bit. I came here looking for tips and advice.
First thing I want to do is clean the truck up a little and make it look presentable...I have started driving it a lot and even though I bought it for utility, I would like it to look a little better.
List of possible upgrades I am considering:
First gonna fix some cosmetic dents and rust on the front and rear bumper...gonna Rhino Line them I guess. Maybe paint the grill black or Rhino Line that too...Any thoughts?
I would like to get new tires and wheels. I like the blacked out look...shopping and surprised how expensive all that is. Considering doing a suspension or body lift so I can fit some larger tires on it. The truck isn't 4 wheel drive, but a few extra inches of ground clearance would be nice. Besides, I have a 4 wheel drive Jeep as a daily driver for when it snows and I don't expect to be doing a lot of heavy off road mudding or anything...just want to be able to get through the woods and the fields without ripping off my exhaust... Planning on replacing the exhaust in the next couple of weeks too. First time I had it in the woods cutting firewood I wrapped a grapevine around the tailpipe backing up and broke one of the hangars. When I was replacing that I noticed that the exhaust is in pretty bad shape. The flanges on the catalytic converter are about rusted to nothing and the the muffler is rusted and pealing apart so it leaks in one corner.
I might look into replacing the drivers seat if I can find one in a junkyard or something...it's a little worn out. I think a heavy guy must have owned the truck before me...
I am looking into bed rails and I think that is something I want to do soon. I have been hauling firewood in the back and I am afraid that I am going to scratch the hell out of the upper lip of the bed. The truck already has a nice Ford bed liner.
I have already put new plugs and plug wires, new belt, thermostat, battery, battery terminals, air filter, O2 sensor, PCV valve, radiator cap, flushed the radiator, and replaced the main radiator hoses on it as precautionary measures. Nothing was really wrong with any of it besides the usual wear but I don't want to get stranded someplace...I have always been afraid of used cars anyway after being burned a couple of times. It runs a little smoother after I replaced the plugs and wires as well.
Anyways, looking forward to doing some fixin-up on my favorite new little Ford Ranger.
