Default Looking for advice on purchase

Howdy folks,
I am in the process of shopping for an 09 Ranger. Thus far, I have been looking at V-6 Sport 4x4s.

The two main things I am set on are to have a 4x4 (live in michigan) and the extended cab. This would also be my DD (roughly 40 miles mixed highway city daily).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Specifically are there any options I would like to make sure I am getting? Does the payload package increase the trucks ride height? Any recommendations manual vs. automatic?

Currently I am driving an 06 Fusion I-4 5-spd. I understand I am going to be paying substantially more for fuel if I get a Ranger. I am willing to sacrifice that since my GF just picked up a new 10 Fusion I-4 with 6-spd so I no longer have a need for a 4-door. Id like to be able to do some minor mods to the truck and some mild off-roading.

Thanks ahead of time!

i also want the sport 4X4 with extended cab and the powerful 4.0L engine
i also am not worried about gas prices as i believe driving my ranger will be so much more fun then a compact sedan or whatever....also, i understand how you want the 4X4, as i live in southern ontario so i get just as bad if not worse wheather then you get, also winters are just horrendous

Make sure you get the 4 Door supercab, the 2 door ext. cab sucks!!! I had the 4 door on my last Ranger and now have the 2 door. Getting in the back is a PITA! Payload package I am pretty sure just gives a hitch. If you want a hitch just go on craigslist, I have found both of mine for $50 on there. Manual or automatic, completely up to you on that, whatever you prefer. I went auto on my truck since my car is stick, and I would prefer automatic for wheeling and driving up the mountains in the snow. More than willing to help ya out with finding mods and for helping with some wheeling.

Oh and how are the Fusions? My Dad is looking at them more and more.

Thanks for the advice.

I love my 06 Fusion with the 2.3L I-4 and 5-spd manual. Its a pretty nice ride. Not too slow. Got 28+ MPG while driving fairly aggressively.

The 2010 that my girlfriend got blows my old one out of the water. A good amount more torque and power with the 2.5L and 6-spd. Very silent inside and very smooth ride. Still to soon to see what kind of FE she is getting. Only has 300 miles on it. Much improved over the already good previous models.

The dealership here is having a hard time finding a selection of Rangers for me to choose from. It seems that a lot of local dealerships only have between 0 and 5 on the lots right now.

Yes! Another Michigan member! What city are you from, if you don't mind me asking? Mr. Ranger and Justin both gave good advice. If you're getting a V6, the 4.0 is a must! And like Justin said, the auto trans is usually the preferred trans for wheeling. Keep in my mind that both auto and manual transmissions are both 5-speed. I have an auto in my '04, and I get anywhere from 18-21 mpg in all city driving.
Trust me, Justin is not kidding when he says to get the 4-door. I have the 4-door, and for some larger things, I still have to move the seat up to get stuff in. In a truck so short on real estate, 4 doors is mandatory for me. It's BS that not all extended cab Rangers have 4 doors.

Live in Royal Oak. Work in Dearborn.

Im pretty set on getting a 4x4 so it looks like I am restricted to the supercab with the 4.0L V-6. I dont think the 3.0L is available anymore.

The only motivation I have to go with the manual instead of auto is that it would save me $1000 on the price of the vehicle. The only problem is there are none with a manual anywhere close to me to test drive.

Nope, 3.0 is gone thankfully. Only 4x4 option with the 3.0 was the Reg Cab. Yea that is why I went stick in my civic...$1000+ cheaper...

I just got my new '09 FX4 four days ago. I agree with the above comments about 4-door vs 2-door extended cab.

When I configured the XLT the way I wanted, the price was such that I might as well (and did) spring for the FX4. Your mileage may vary depending on the options you choose. The FX4 sits higher on larger wheels and tires, but I don't think the payload package (which adds heavier duty shocks) makes it ride higher overall. I don't think mine is level, however, with the rear appearing slightly higher, though I haven't measured it or anything.

I was leaning toward a manual both to save money and because that's what I'm used to, but decided to buy an automatic for convenience and because my fiancee doesn't want to (re)learn driving standard.

Cool, I currently live in Dearborn. So I take it you have tried Village/Milliken/North Bros and all those dealerships?

All stock trucks sit higher in the back. That's what the t-bar twist is for!

I bought it for MPGs and reliability. Easiest stick to drive ever. Its an 07. What hype are you referring to? I feel more badass in the Ranger by far. Sit higher, more power, more badass looking. Plus the ladies prefer a guy in a truck to a guy in a civic...haha

Well thanks for the advice on Rangers (and civics ). It looks like a Ranger is out of my budget right now. I am going to be getting a 2009 Focus SES 5-spd and hopefully Ill save enough money in the next couple years to be able to get a truck.
