Default third new one

Hi - I am going to be getting a new Ranger in a week or so. I ordered it on May 19th. This will be the third new one I bought, I had a 1984 four cylinder with 5 speed, a 1992 V6 with automatic (didn't like the transmission much), and now this time I went back to four cylinders with 5 speed. All two wheel drive.
I heard rumors that Ford is going to drop the Ranger - any truth to that?

Heard that too. 2011, I think. Real estate developers are drooling at the notion of putting million-dollar condos on the plant's riverside location.

Considering what a strong nameplate the Ranger has been for Ford (most successful small truck ever) I think this is a boneheaded move.

Well, my new truck is at the dealership - I drove it around the block this morning (Saturday), but they want to finish preparing it. I won't get it until Monday afternoon. Now I have to decide what type of cover I want for the bed - fabric or solid, or a cap. A tool box mounted up against the cab would be nice too.

You can get the tool box and some companies make a tonneau for a truck with a toolbox! But I have only see soft tops like that.

welcome, so you must be a fan of the simplicity of 2wd over 4x4? just wondering if you ever get stuck in snow or mud, and how is it off-road and in winter?

i also heard that ford was originally going to drop the ranger in 2010 or so but elected to keep it until 2011 when they will redesign it or relaunch another compact/sub-compact pick-up truck...unfortunatly, i heard the name most liely wont be ranger as may even be F100 or a past inspiried ford name..also, i think ford will end up doing what the did with the taurus 4 or 4 years ago...

stop production, come out with a redisnged and renamed model the newt year(five-hunderd), sell that new model for like 3 or 4 yeras and then bring back a redisgned taurus( i think 2008) and push that car....however, i cant understand why ford ends produstion of it best known cars and trucks, hopefully the f-150 and mustang are safe though...

The color is called Dark Shadow Gray Metallic - it looks real nice. Naturally it rained on the way home from the dealer. I backed it in the garage and wiped it all down - even in the box. I wonder how long it will take to get the first scratch!
I hadn't thought about a tool box causing a problem with a tonneau cover - I suppose they get in the way where they hang over the edge of the box.

As far as 2 or 4 wheel drive - I live in Wisconsin and we get our share of snow. I live out in the country where the snow blows and drifts, and I have a sort of steep driveway. I have had a few 2 wheel drive trucks and one 4 wheel drive chevy (1973 I think - the worst vehicle I ever owned). I can get around just fine with a 2 wheel drive pickup if it has a little extra weight in the bed and stick shift. Like they say - with 4 wheel drive you just get stuck farther from help!
I asked the salesman if he had heard anything about Ford dropping the Ranger- he hadn't and didn't think they will. He heard they are working on putting a small diesel in them maybe next year.

Oh yea DSG! Thats what I got. I have tons and tons of scratches from wheeling.

FOr the toolbox, I was thinking of a saddle box, but you can get one that sits in the bed and it will be fine with the tonneau as long as it sits lower than the rails.

Ranger was supposed to end in 09 at one point, then gas prices shot up, and they extended it. The F100 name was rumored but has died out in the last year or so. I saw some spy photos of the new International Ranger...lets just hope it doesnt come to fruition. A small diesel in the Ranger...HA! Rangers in every other country have had a diesel option for who knows how long. They should have brought the diesel here years ago! I would have lined up for one real quick. Especially being able to convert to biodiesel, would have been amazing!
