Recently purchased a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L with 120,000 miles for $2,500 and knew it was in need of a few things that had been neglected such as automatic transmission fluid was dark brown and smelt a little burnt so had the entire system flushed out and replaced fluid. Also had the spark plug wire and plugs replaced. Also replaced the air filter. The rest of it is in pretty good shape for a 2002, however my MPG is 11 in town driving. Being winter right now has a bearing on gas usage, letting it warm up before driving and such, but is that about average, below average or what ? Any ideas or thoughts. Not looking to spend an arm and a leg on this vehicle other than what it needs to keep it on the road.

Epa specs for that truck were 15 mpg city on the 2wd and 13 mpg city on the 4wd. Extreme cold can drop fuel mileage by 20%. Id say your mpg's are at the low end of the spectrum but not to a point where I'd worry something is really wrong. Especially if you let the truck idle for a long time each morning to warm up.

I'd go through all the basics, check tire pressure, check alignment, check for vacuum leaks, replace the fuel filter, clean the maf sensor and throttle body, if you have a scan tool check the fuel trim data.

Thanks for the "check this, check that" ideas. I'll get the MAF and Throttle Body cleaner and keep you posted of any changes. Thanks.
