For what its worth the Toyota is not anywhere near equal with a Ranger.

I am not sure what you mean by this, however my research shows the Ranger has more maintenance issues than the Tacoma. Thinks like ball joints, wheel bearings, etc. seem to last longer on the Tacoma. My wife has a Toyota Matrix that has never been in the shop and it is 12 years old with 201k on it. I suspect the Tacoma is like that, but you pay for it. With used vehicles, old is old, and miles are miles, so be wise with your dollars and carefully look at the individual vehicle.
I picked up this Ranger because the major stuff has been done to it, and should be good for a few years. It will be used as an honest to goodness work truck, and I think it will excel at it.
Note: The 2000 Escort I have has never been in the shop either. It has 156k on it, however the tranny is starting to lose it. The good ol' Ford solenoid issue along with a slipping 1st gear.
