Default New to Ford Ranger

Back in 1983 I picked up a 74 Ford Courier and drove it until I crashed it. Haven't had a truck since. Went shopping for a used truck about 2 years ago and learned as much as I could from looking at this forum and watching videos on servicing the models I was interested in.

The GM trucks were out of the question as every person I talked with had to do too much service work to them over the years. My brother Jon convinced me to go Toyota. Brother, they are expensive!! Much more than the Ranger. From what I have read on this forum the Ranger is good for the miles, equal to Toyota, but may require a bit more maintenance than the Toyota to get there.

After looking at and driving dozens of Tacomas and Rangers I found a 2009 model work truck. Manual everything, just how a work truck should be. Recent work included the clutch, flywheel, master and slave cylinders, front and rear brake pads, tires, cap and wires (yes, I wondered why, too), front wheel bearings. If this were a Tacoma it is likely that only the clutch would have been serviced outside of the consumables.

I live in the rust belt and haven't licensed it yet as I have been treating rust on the inside of both door panels and on the inside of the lower tailgate. Once I am done with that I put it on the road. Looking forward to using it for hauling dirt, wood and generally large stuff.

You will find they all need maintenance, the last Ranger I had I drove from brand new to 168,xxx miles. Aside from oil changes, insurance and fuel the truck cost me around $0.08 per mile to own.

For what its worth the Toyota is not anywhere near equal with a Ranger.

I am not sure what you mean by this, however my research shows the Ranger has more maintenance issues than the Tacoma. Thinks like ball joints, wheel bearings, etc. seem to last longer on the Tacoma. My wife has a Toyota Matrix that has never been in the shop and it is 12 years old with 201k on it. I suspect the Tacoma is like that, but you pay for it. With used vehicles, old is old, and miles are miles, so be wise with your dollars and carefully look at the individual vehicle.

I picked up this Ranger because the major stuff has been done to it, and should be good for a few years. It will be used as an honest to goodness work truck, and I think it will excel at it.
Note: The 2000 Escort I have has never been in the shop either. It has 156k on it, however the tranny is starting to lose it. The good ol' Ford solenoid issue along with a slipping 1st gear.
