Resurrecting An Old Friend
I am in the process of getting an old friend back on the highway. I bought a 4-cylinder 2.3 L, 1993 Ford Ranger 4X4 in 1999, to use in a commute back and forth over the Sierra Nevadas. I put about 120,000 miles on that little beast; week in, week out, rain, sunshine, blizzard, whatever, it took me back and forth without a hitch. Then I let my wife use it for her local commute. The oil change outfit that she was using let the manual transmission run low, and she fried the transmission.
I didn't have time to deal with this, so the truck was parked. I recently retired, and now have time to bring this rig back to life after about five years of setting.
I don't plan on doing anything radical during the renovation. I'll just clean it up, replace worn bushings, etc. Any changes that I make will to make the rig more bulletproof than it already is. I've heard something about 3 plastic or rubber plugs on the tranny that can be replaced with metal plugs to prevent fluid loss, and I will be looking into that first thing.
