Default Need some advice

Recently I was changing my clutch and noticed the pinion seal was leaking.
So I changed it and now when ever I am not on the gas there is a whirling noise coming from the rear end and a vibration. And it gets more pronounced the higher my speed is
Dose any one have any thoughts??

Hi Welcome to the FRF

My thought is you probably should not be driving your truck.

Normally when you remove the pinion nut to replace the seal you will also need to at minimum inspect the bearings and races and replace the pinion crush sleeve.

the crush sleeve once compressed to set the preload stays compressed and shouldn't be reused.

the vibration you are feeling and noise you are hearing is a direct result of incorrect preload. the only question now is what is damaged in the rear end.

you may have damaged the ring and pinion and resulting metal shavings will damage the bearings.

The good news is used Ford Ranger rear ends are inexpensive compared to buying the parts to rebuild yours if needed.

Start with draining the rear end, and inspecting the ring and pinion for damage.

Thanks for the advice. I have not gotten back into it yet. But if the gear dope is clean is it possible I didn't tighten the nut enough? allowing a little play[/quote]

Also I have a company vehicle so I have not been driving it. After I changed everything I only put 100 or so miles on it

All I can say is inspect the bearings and gears and you should replace the crush sleeve anytime you replace the seal.

This being said I am sure many people have done what you did and just try and tighten the pinion nut down which will put the preload on the bearings which is not what you want to do.

However it is your truck do as you please.

Also I have a company vehicle so I have not been driving it. After I changed everything I only put 100 or so miles on it
