Default New member needs spark plugs

26 months ago, after an 8 year battle with cancer, my Ford loving husband left this earth for a better place.
He & I had often worked on our own cars together (always Fords) and had built a few street rods together, always Ford's...and had enjoyed our years together.
Now, as a solo (I prefer that over the word single) I have to fend for myself in a world full of unscrupulous auto mechanics!
My truck is a 2000 4.0L 2WD XLT
It has less than 90,000 miles and still looks and runs (most of the time) pretty good. I use it everyday, I pull a 600 lb very small pop-up camper usually with two kayaks strapped on top.
It has a great topper that I take advantage of all the time.
I love the truck and would like to continue driving it until I can no longer drive (I am approaching 70 at what seems to be 70 mph!! LOL)

Lately the check engine has come on and the code indicates it it the misfire monitor. That would explain the occasional shudder while at idle.

I know the last time the plugs were replaced was about 3 years ago. We always saved receipts for work &/or parts for the truck but I can't find anything that would help me know what kind of plugs he installed. I know they were not cheap or from wally world.

Now, I want to replace the spark plugs but I am not sure which plugs would be the best for my truck.
Any suggestions would be kindly appreciated.

yes, welcome! x2 on morotcraft plats - i believe that's what's in mine now. if you don't mind buying online, rockauto.com has spark plug/wire kits that are priced well usually (if shipping isn't too much).

iirc, autolite brand sparkplugs seem to have a good rep around here for rangers. i have not tried them though.

Thanks guys for your feedback. I learned yesterday from the mechanic that had installed the plugs in Feb. 2014, (20,000 miles ago) that they were Autolite Platinum's. After talking with Val (mechanic/owner of the automotive repair shop) we decided to wait to see if the ck-eng lite comes on again. He suggested that I begin using a bottle of injector cleaner with every fill up, beginning with one even though the tank was down to 1/4. I did. My husband always added cleaner, in fact, he bought it by the 6-pack. And since he has been gone I forgot to do that.
Val tells me that 20K miles should not be a problem with those plugs. So if it's not a plug, it might be a dirty injector or a bad wire.
So my next Q is, since I know the plug wires have not been changed in at least 10 years, would that be a good thing to do??
And BTW, this site is great. And to RoberticusMaximus, I love your smiling Husky dog!! Does he talk??

Hello Lynda, welcome to the site.Sorry to here about your husband.
I've been on this site about 6 years, and it is a wealth of imformation on ford rangers.I too am getting up there in age.I'm 68,so we are of the few older folks,on this site. They still help out all your ranger issues.
I have a 3.0 engine in mine,91,000 miles, still runs like new.As far as spark plugs go stick with motorcraft, thats what they came with new.
I also use fuel injector cleaner in mine,I use Lucas fuel injector, and upper cylinder
cleaner,at least every other time I fill up,or every time, when I remember,(senior moment issues). Some guys on here think it does nothing. But I swear by it.Keeps my 3.0 running smooth as can be.I've been buying it by the quart, but when I run
out I'm gonna buy it by the gallon,1 free quart that way.
What part of Florida you live in? I'm in orlando.
See ya,Old retired guy

Welcome Lynda, Glad you found us. Have fun and enjoy FRF. Sorry for your loss. He's now your guardian angel. We will help you any way we can. Hope you are doing well. Ford engines do well with motorcraft or autolite plugs.
