Default I have inherited a 2000 Ford Ranger v6

So my Father-in-law left me his 2000 Ford Ranger Truck.

He was a fine father-in-law, and I miss him. He spent the last 18 months of his life in a nursing home, and did not drive for about a year prior to that.

My wife's old man was known for a lot of things ~ but one of the things he was most noted for was never maintaining anything. The first thing I did when I got the truck was change the oil. The oil filter had rust on it.

The truck sat for a long time, and it only has 92k miles on it. My oldest son wants to put a lift kit on it, and install a bigger engine ~ he has no chance. My daughter Courtney (who is named after my wife's old man) ~ does not want to change anything. It'll probably go to her.

Currently we call it the "Pappa's truck," and occasionally the "Dump Truck" ~ because all it does it drive to the dump once a week.

The wife is committed to keeping it at all costs ~ but does not want to spend any money.... So, I'm not sure exactly what ll costs" is supposed to mean ~ lol

I have addressed many issues already, but it still has many issues to go:

Here is a list of unfinished business:
1. There is No heat (but the AC works great). Over the weekend, I replaced the Thermostat, and flushed heater box ~ still no heat.
2. In the process of changing the thermostat, I was able to get a very good look at the severe corrosion in the cooling system. I suspect it has never been flushed. It had very little antifreeze in it, and there may very well have been more orange mud in there than there was fluid. I've drained the whole system and flushed it 5 times with straight water. It comes out burnt orange every time. There is still orange muddy residue in every hose.
3. There is a coolant leak on one of the little flanges that supplies coolant to the top engine that has me worried. I've posted a link on youtube that allows you to see the condition of the coolant (after the 5th system flush) as well as the leak (
) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to address this issue?
4. Not that big of a deal, but funny..... The radio is broken. At the moment it has 3 CDs, and one cassette tape crammed into it. I guess my Pop really wanted to hear some music at some point, and kept shoving CDs in there. I've removed the radio pending a replacement.

Working on cars has always been something I've wanted to do, and I have some experience working on a 1985 Ford 351 Windsor.

Any suggestions/ encouragements would be helpful.

Did you flush with just water, or have you flushed with a product designed to clean out the system?

like this http://amzn.to/2iFruvq

for the radio you need just a few things, like a bezel
http://amzn.to/2iFruvq

and a wire harness:

i installed this radio:

and love it. even installed a backup camera, which is super convenient.

Edit:
and I totally understand the whole wife not letting me spend money on anything. I have my truck and my 89 Cherokee XJ that I spend all my extras on, but had to figure out extra income to do so, since none of my actual income could be used on it without a fight.

I have a 2000 XLT OEM radio if you need one. Since the AC works I'd assume all of the vacuum lines are intact. Maybe check out the heater control valve under the hood?

Flush the heater core out with CLR or some other type of rad flush.
But if its that corroded and has never been changed, chances are your heater core is pooched and will need to be replaced

Update:

Guys thanks for the responses.

I wanted to update you: I've addressed the leak with JB Weld. It's the first time a JB weld fix has ever worked for me.

After flushing a 2nd time with (http://amzn.to/2iFruvq) ~ Thanks "Around in Circles" ~ both hoses to the heater box are hot.... but still no heat.

I think it might be the door ~~ I've got the glove box out, and can see the dial turning ` but nothing is happening underneath.

Thanks for all the encouragements.

/Quick update:

So I followed the instructions in this video and now I have heat:

It didn't work like it did on camera though, and I had to flush it at least 9 separate times to get all the foul buildup that had amassed over the years.

Next project: The radio does not work. Cigarette Lighter (in-operational ~ and removed). 12v charger (operational).

I was thinking a fuse is blown, but I don't have an owner's manual ~ so I'm at a loss to know which fuse needs to be replaced.

Can anyone help me out here and maybe post a picture of the fuse, or a diagram from the manual?

Props in advance.

9 times, damn! Mine only took a forward and back flush. Heat is nice to have though, isn't it?
