Default First Car owner from CA

I have had my 2008 Ford Ranger XL 2wd extended cab for almost a year now, and I joined this forum because I want to start putting money into my truck.
I've already used plastidip to paint the wheels, so I thought the next move would be buying bigger off-road tires. I've seen some guys buy bigger tires without spending $ on a lift kit. What size tires do you recommend for someone that wants bigger tires, but can't afford a lift kit yet?
