Default 1998 4x4 ball joint replacement

A local shop said our Ranger needs new ball joints. The want $1300.00 to do the job! The factory service manual states that the ball joints can't be replaced. It mandates replacing both the upper and lower control arms. That requires removing the torsion rods. This is getting ugly. Has anyone done this job on their own '98 4x4? If so, were you able to simply replace the ball joints?

Like he said. Uppers need the control arms replaces. Bottoms can be pressed out and new pressed in. Can rent the tool from the auto parts store.

Fred, welcome to FRF. As stated above the upper control arms MUST be replaced as a unit, not serviceable, & the lower ball joints can be replaced without replacing the control arms.

Shop wanted a 1000 to do it, I rented a press and did it myself. Bottoms are pressed out and the uppers come with a whole new control arms. Make sure you get moog problem solvers.
