Hi there,
I hope a lot of you can help me out, I'm a new owner of a nice 'old' 1968 Ford F100 Ranger. I just bought it today. It looks real good in pictures but I have a lot of work to do on it and I hope you all can help.
It's a big V8 Automatic with transmission problems, etc. I just drove it home tonight and haven't been able to work on it yet.
Here are my main issues:
Transmission has a hard time going into reverse (sometimes will, sometimes won't)
Transmission seems to be missing 2nd gear (the automatic transmission has 3 speeds don't it?) It starts out in 1st gear and revs up like crazy and finally shifts at about 40 mph.
It has a new alternator but it's not charging the battery, I suspect it's connection problems.
It has 17" tires on it that look good but is that hurting it?
It seems to have play in the steering, is it because of the big 17" tires?
The heater core leaks so I undid the hoses to it and made them go into each other.
There's no tailgate and I'm wondering what color scheme the tailgate was originally.
There's a plastic insert in the truck bed, it's pretty rusted under it.
All the brakes don't work. They work but it pulls to the left real bad so there something up with one side of the other...I guess.
The exhaust is not totally connected to the exhaust manifold so I need to tighten that up and get a washer or whatever it is that goes there.
Well, I realize that's a lot of 'wrong' with it and ya all can't answer every one of my problems in one email so I'll just take a little time and work on the major to the minor.
If you can give me advise, please let me know how I should tackle my transmission problem. Do you think I should check and/or change the fluid, filter, etc? What if I needed a new one, how much do salvage yard ones run about?
