Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 1992 Ranger as a project for my 15yr old. The check engine light was on when I bought it, so I figured I'd look up the process to read the code and found my way to this forum.

My 15yr old has struggled with school the last couple years, so at the beginning of this school year I told him that if he kept his grades up for the first 9 weeks, when he's eligible for his learners permit I'd take him to get it. Well, he's keeping his grades up and I figured that after he gets his learners I need something else to entice him to do good. I was poking around craigslist and this little gem popped up for $350. After calling the owner, and test driving it - I paid $340 and drove it home.

2 items - First the gas gauge is dead. Not a big deal for ME but will be for the kid when he starts driving, so I'll have to research that and fix it. Second item was the check engine light, and it's flashing 629 which looks like a transmission solenoid issue... In overdrive it was shifting in and out a lot, but switching it to drive it calmed down a bit so I'm not overly concerned.

the truck has 145,000 miles on it from what I can tell, it's a 2wheel drive with the 4cylinder engine. Nothing to write home about, but it will be a great first vehicle for the kid.

I should point out that the "drive home" was an hour and 15 minutes, and it ran great (aside from the overdrive slippage).
