did you check to make sure its charged with no leaks?

the high and low pressure switches will cause the compressor to not kick in

They sell charge kits at auto parts stores but it still wouldn't fix leaks in the system.

It was ice cold before it did this. It had been working great and wasn't getting warmer like you would expect if it was leaking down. It was working and then just didn't. The fuse in the panel inside of the drivers door was good. The fuses in the power distribution box were all good. We have been unable to find a schematic that shows which relay (if any) is for the a.c. compressor clutch. When you turn the a.c. on you hear the blower kick on, but the clutch doesn't pull in. There is no voltage at the compressor plug. Right now, I'm going on the assumption that the system is fully charged because there has been no sign of it leaking down, such as it not getting as cold. This sucker would freeze you out of the cab.

Just to troubleshoot everything, I would run a jumper wire from the battery to the compressor clutch. If it engages and cools properly, there are a lot of things to check.

The compressor clutch may not receive power for these reasons (among others):

MAP or MAF sensors fouled
Throttle Position Sensor problem
Power Steering Pressure Switch bad
These conditions will make the computer think the engine is under heavy load and kill the power.

Engine Coolant Temp sensor bad, would make the computer think the engine is overheating. A bad time to engage the clutch. No power.

Ambient Temperature sensor bad. This would make the computer think its freezing weather. The oil in the compressor would be too thick to protect the compressor, so no power.

Hope this helps narrow the problem down.

some of these things you mentioned would cause driveability issues and bad or poor fuel economy.. also a check engine light.

personally before getting that far I would check the high and low pressure switches. keep it simple. plus, jumping out the compresser is a terrible idea. If it is in fact low on charge, you are now putting the compressor at risk of locking it up.

I agree. I was a little amazed that so much could affect the clutch engagement. I certainly don't advise keeping the jumper on the clutch. With a helper it would only take a few seconds to see if the AC operates correctly with a jumper.

You are absolutely right that most of these conditions would throw a CEL too. Again, this is only intended as a quick troubleshooting method. Assuming everything works, I would next check continuity from the clutch connector to the fuse/relay.

Ok in order to avoid a new ac thread I'm asking here. I have a similar problem. Compressor was not engaging so I messed with the switch a little (#1) and with it halfway unplugged the clutch engaged for a couple seconds and would cycle for a little while but the cycling sped up so the compressor is running for about 1/2 second before turning off then on in about 2 seconds. Air blows cool but not freezing. Temp is about 80 out now but I dont have a thermometer to measure whats coming from the vents.

I think the switch is a little dirty and I will probably replace it, unless I can clean it. Will MAF cleaner work? Is there something else like low refrigerant that makes it cycle soo quickly?

Go to Radio Shack and get some contact cleaner. That will work for sure. Make sure it says it leaves no residue.
