Default Replacing steering box lower seal 1989 Ford Ranger

I just discovered that my steering box is leaking from the bottom seal. I removed the pitman arm and the retaining clip. The clip was very tough to get out. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to get the seal out. I haven't tried the hi pressure expulsion method yet. This is a "89". So I'm making plans that this method won't work. I also tried drilling holes in the seal but the metal there is very tough and my drill bit just seems to be dancing around without making any headway. I was going to drop the whole box but the bolt holding it in place in front of flexible joint seems to be frozen and I definitely don't want to snap it. Is thaty a keyed bolt or does it have to be totally unthreaded? Is it possible to pull the pitman shaft out without removing the steering box from the vehicle? What bugaboos should I be aware of? Any advice would be appreciated.
