On my 89 I took the metal piece out of a crimp connector and sliced down the length of it with a dremel cutoff wheel. Put it on the cable and then crimped it til the gap closed.. It was the perfect length.

this is the way i fixed mine. same concept.

1" hollow nylon spacer or some stiff plastic tubing
2 small hose clamps (for testing/temporary use, zip ties work great!)
Utility Knife (Exacto Knife)
Flat head screwdriver

this is a pic of a mustang but same concept applies.
