Nope, you need to have a key programed to your PATS module. I had the same issue when I had my system put in a few years back. But it then quit working. The box has a wire that you wrap around the igntion switch that then relays the info back to the module then the brain, telling it there's a key that's programed and in the slot, so therefore it lets the truck start. My module stopped reading the key. So I upgraded to the module that's programed with the PATS and doesn't require a key. I think the box ran me $60 installed and programed, but that's because I know someone.
You could have a blank key programed, but might as well have it cut as well in case you ever take it out and you don't have a useless key programed to a truck you can't do anything with.
