The medium duty antenna springs sold at truck stops work great to prevent damage. Thats with the fiberglass antennas at least.

i was just about to mount mine on the roof but i was worried about it being to close to my head but i guess thats not a problem. right before i was about to do it i decided to put bucket seats in and build a console so i mounted it in the console with an external speaker on the front of the console.

haha, I know, I fixed it for the most part. The audio cables are still running in the same place, just tucked back behind the dash a little more.

I have a cobra 29 with external speaker and a uniden 510XL that for the time being just sit on the seat.I velcroed the 510 to the top of the 29. This allows me to listen to two seperate channels at once which when you are on two lane roads escorting oversize loads, allows you to talk to the oncoming truckers that are on channel 19 while still talking to the driver of the load your are escorting on another channel. I made a cover plate to go over the plastic console that sits on the hump with some switches in it. I then hardwired my power wire for my cobra so that I can just plug the cobra in when I want to use it and unplug it when I don't need it. I have the cig lighter hooked up to the uniden. I run a wilson 1000 on the cobra 29 and a wilson little wil on the uniden 510. Both are mag mounts that I have on the top of the truck running the wires down through the passenger door.

Mine is under the dash on the right side of the steering wheel. Although it is a compact size.

I've got mine up on the ceiling as well. I love it. I never have to have it up loud because the speaker is right next to my head. The mic cord, I have wrap around the back of the radio and then it's snuggly hooked into the clip on the opposite side of where it attaches to the radio. It's awesome.

I'll grab some pics tomorrow if it's not raining.

That was my first all mode radio that I owned. I also made my own separation kit for it. The cable for the head is the same as a 6 wire telephone line, so I went to Wal-mart and got one of the flat cables and a coupling and for the mic, it is a cat5 cord for the computer, so I got a cable and coupling for that too. Used Velcro to attach the head to the dash. Instant $75 separation kit. Just glad that the Icom came with the kit as it is a different setup.

Here is the new Yaesu FT-857

Goose-neck window mount

I ran all the wires in a similar fashion to the audio cables, but to under the passenger seat, where I have the main part of the radio. Pics of the antenna to come as soon as I get it in a few weeks (I'm running it on the 2M/70CM dual-band on the hood for the time being...)
