Default shifter

what kind of metal are the shifters made from? i have i t-handle (made of aluminum i believe) and its been drilled out to much to just sit on the shifter (plus its threaded not splined) would it be possible to weld it onto the shifter (and if it is would it be possible to do in my high school shop class)
