What most people do is find a new cluster out of another Ranger with the tach and swap that in.

Install a Scan Guage.... EZ install and has many functions for under $200. (RPM, water temp, intake air, MPG, code reader, etc.)
Less than one hour to install.

I have a 1996 ranger "no tech". I'm not smart enough to swap out the dash set up and then hook all the wiring up. I want to just put a tach in to monitor my gas usage to get the most mpg's when shifting. I haven't found any info on how/where the wiring hooks up. I'm sure it's available. Good luck

I purchased this truck from an individual in July 2012. He was the second owner. He had the truck for 4 years. His son could not drive a stick and needed a car. During the time he had it, only regular maintenance was performed. To my knowledge, no major work has been done.

Re: Aftermarket tachometer install
Go to your local parts store and just pick one up. AutoMeter makes the best aftermarket gauges in my opinion. Mount it where you want it and run the wires. If i remember correctly it is 4 wires a ground, a key switched, one that goes to your gauge lights so it lights up at night, and one for your signal from the coil. instruction that come with it are very straight forward. They are usually set up for a V-8 engine and have to small jumper wires stuck out the back. Cut one of them if you have a V-6 or both for the I-4.

AFAIK it is just a simple swap. I believe all Rangers are wired for a tachometer.

Re: Aftermarket tachometer install
Cool! Is that even with what ppl say saing you can get white face plate one from an explore and stuff? Or should I cut the harness from the one I'm gonna pick up from the junk yard? And to calibrate the speedo is it the same "resistance" as the ranger?
Thx

Make a signature so we know more about your truck.
The tach can be plug and play after 1998. A little more tinkering pre-98

"As Far As I Know"
I think the explorer ones will just swap right in as well. There may be compatibility issues with different years but I do not know for sure.
