Default Howe to add power seat wiring

I know there are many threads here about the power seats from the Explorer going onto the ranger, but I'm a total newbie and decided to start a new thread since I can't find the specific answer to my question.

I picked up a pair of power buckets today from a 95 explorer, and intend to put them in my 2002 Ranger Ext cab 4X4 4DR. Since the Ranger has the manual 60/40 split bench, obviously there is no power or wiring to the seats.

Do I rip the wiring harness from the Explorer, or is there some other wiring I can use? Also, I understand that you are supposed to ground as close to source as possible, but which fuse panel would that be on my vehicle?

Lastly, if I want to install a center console, what are my options? I have read here about the "mini console" but I'm not clear what that is. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Use the wiring harness from the explorer... it would be easier for you since you have no clue of what your doing yet. The motor of the seat is mounted to the seat. So basically you want to get power to it. You can use the fuse box or I would think a relay is better. Some people shall chime in and help further..

All you need is power and ground, you will want the connectors off the seats to make it easier.

On the expo the power windows and seats share a fuse. On the ranger the windows have half the fuse size.

I wired mine to the windows circuit at the accessory delay relay. Have had no issues.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. So if I can get the harness from the Explorer, that would be easier? I do understand the motor is in the seat, but my question was more about where the power terminates and how to hook it up via either relay or fuse panel. Also, do I just fish the wires under the carpet, or is there some other method? Lastly, I answered my own question about the mini console by doing a little more reading. I already have the "mini" console (cup holder) under the dash. I pulled the long center console from the Explorer when I pulled the seats., not knowing if it will fit or not. If I remove the mini console, will the Explorer console fit? Once again, thanks for helping out a new guy.

First post...

The long expo console should fit in there after u pull your shorty out. I'm in the process of doing mine now, pulled one from j/y for 15 bucks. Got my leather seats from a '99 today, ready to pull everything out when I get home at 6am.

I want to take pics of everything and do a how-to, will take a bit of time as I'm going to rip out and clean my carpet in the process. Should be fun...

I just installed some power Explorer seats in my extended cab. They fit almost perfectly - had to drill out one hole on each seat to get the bolt to fit through. The hard part was getting power to the seats so they would move. This is what I did:

- Used 10 gauge wire from the junction box under the hood. I just installed a eye connector and put it directly under the bolt for power (not fused).
- Ran the wire through the firewall, then split it into two 12 gauge wires that went under the carpet to each seat. Put the wire in BEFORE you bolt the seats down - much easier.
- At the seat, I cut off the connector (as I did not have the other side). Installed a fuse in the power line for each seat (think I used a 25 amp inline fuse).
- Hooked the power to the wire that controls seat movement and seat heater. Ensure you leave some slack in the power line because as the seat moves, if the wire is too short, it will break or pull out.
- For ground, I just connected the ground wire to one of the metal screws in the seat. Note: ensure at least one of the bolts for the seat is connected tightly before testing or it will not work because there will be no ground.
- For the seat heater, ran one additional wire to a switched power source in the fuse panel under the dash. My seat heater control is on the seat itself and requires a constant power source and a switched power source. This wiring will not work with seats that have the heater controls in the dash.

Hope this helps. If I had thought about it, I should have taken pictures as I was doing everything.

Yellow wire is your power, black wire is ground.

no yellow wires, but a yellow connector. NEVER put power to a yellow connector. they are for the airbag system.
