That part of the HVAC system is controlled by vacuum, if there is a vacuum leak then the system defaults to defrost. Start by checking the lines under the dash and make sure none of them have come disconnected anywhere.

The controls for which vents the air flows out of is vacuum operated. The vacuum line is either broken or disconnected. Follow the line from end to end and find the break:

- Manifold vacuum port on the driver side of the engine
- Wraps around the back of the engine and goes under the air filter box
- There is a vacuum reservoir ball under the air filter box it connects to
- Another line out of the reservoir into the cab behind the glove box
- Into the HVAC control panel
