stick shift knob

Okay so don't laugh. Mainly b/c many of you have fancy (three letter word) trucks and I have a beat up old 92 Ranger, which I love and it will have to die on me before I get rid of it. I looks like S&*(, but runs like a champ.

So I'm driving yesterday and my shifter knob falls off. I see it came off before and who ever did it wrapped some material around the stick and put the knob on so it would stay tight. Any ideas as to the best way of putting it back on. I though about gorilla glue. Seems to be good stuff.

I'm a little P.Oed at FOrd right now b/c I wrote them an email saying I'm trying to locate a part number for my driver side seat and I get the stupid standard email about contacting their local dealers blah blah.

I was hoping some one would give a crap and maybe look up some old blue prints from the 92 year model. Customer service sucks in this country any more.

I probably made $700 this month in tips from my newspaper customers b/c I give a crap about where they want their paper delivered. ANd gving them them prompt and courteous service. Ive even met some of them casually b/c they happen to be up at that ungodly hour I"m driving by.

Well now you know somebody dropped your tranny at some point in time. The Ford procedure is to "carefully heat" the knob and remove. I've never seen one stay on long afterwards. Small hole, threaded, with a set screw works pretty good. I personally have an old glass doorknob (with a set screw) to install when I do my clutch. What are you looking for on your seat? The whole thing? Is the back broke? Go grab some seats out of an exploder, hell rangers and broncos are plentiful, you should be able to find alot of donors.

Thanks. I just haven't had time to look at local salvage yards yet. If people would quit planning stuff on the weekends. Being the only male in the home and having 2 children under the age of 10 does not allow for a lot of free time.

its gonna be hard for you to find an aftermarket shifter knob, as our shifter arms are splined, not threaded. i ended up turning my own shift knob in metal shop and drilled it a 1/16th of an inch bigger than the shifter arm so it would fit over, but be snug.

i had the exact same problem. and my 1-5 thing spun around with the vibration of the motor lol all you have to do from keeping it on without glueing it is just foil lol get a small piece and wrap it around the part it goes on and wala. it has never came off once since i've done it. and the 1-5 part i took that little piece off and super glued it back on to the nob.

if you want an aftermarked try to find one with the set screws

When my ex pulled the knob off my old ranger we re-attached it using epoxy....

Thanks to all. I'll head to Lowes or somewhere tomorrow to pick up some epoxy, gorilla glue or something. Or maybe later after my wife wakes from her afternoon nap, then I can get a few minutes free.

order a hurst for it, besides the cool knob that comes with it, the shaft is threaded 3/8-16 so you can put anything on it. the improvement over stock is well worth the $220. and you can change knobs to your hearts content. if you must go with the stock setup, some epoxy glue should do the trick. silicone might even work.

There is no part number for a seat. Ford sells the seat as component pieces, i.e.: lower frame, upper frame, seat base foam, seat back foam, seat base cover, seat back cover and all of the miscellaneous bits and pieces. As stated, go junkyarding and you should be able to pick up a pair of seats for cheap.

As far as the shift knob goes, either glue it or get a Momo knob. Momo uses a set screw and works fine in our trucks. I'm rocking one right now.

if you have no future plans of removeing it epoxy. i have found the quickest way is to put candy wrappers over the stick and drive on the knob. what i finnaly did was turn down a bolt and glue it in the stick. then use screw to hold it in place and cover with shift diagram plate

Just a thought on aftermarket shift knobs. You can pull the shifter and have it threaded for a pretty reasonable price I would imagine, any local machine shop can do it. I used a heli-coil kit to make an 8-ball shift knob (Original I know) and then threaded my shifter myself to 1/2"x13. (Note, if you don't have the equipment and some experience with threading, I don't suggest doing this yourself). I only had to turn the shaft down a little bit for the 1/2" threads, but a machine shop could turn it down for 3/8" threads easily. Then almost any shift knob you could find would fit.
