Im in desperate need of some help!! I took my shift motor off my transfer case but there's a brown wire going up to the transfer case the doesn't unplug or disconnect... What do I do? I need to get the motor off! I can't go anywhere til I do. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

Also, it looks like there is a slight possibility of doing the manual t-case and if its easy enough I'm gonna mess with it a little... Even though I bought a $70 shift motor i would rather have a good reliable linkage instead of an electric motor. We'll see!

u need to cut that wire... u will have to splice it back together later.. i suggest getting one of the female/male connectors so u can easily disconnect and reconnect it later.
that is just a ground wire.

make sure u dont cut it too short!!

here this may help too

I didnt read any of the other posts, but from what my dealership told me the random flashing of the 4wd lights is from not using it enough, but that doesnt mean its the problem. You should be able to put it in 4wd any day of the year and it work on the dime, just giving advice on what could help you out.

Now I'm pissed off... I just chased parts around town today to install the new motor which cost me $100 to find that it's not the motor... For some reason the lights still flashing and the 4x4 still won't engage. I double checked the connections and I'm taking out the switch to clean it. I need my 4x4 right now! I'm doing farm work and there are places on the property that I can't get to!! Frustrating.

Yeah it is. I'm gonna add some ATF to it tomorrow and see if that helps it shift....? Any other ideas guys?

Found out it blew a fuse too... So the motor might not even be bad... But oh well I have a new one with a warranty now...

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but I'm having the same issue as the OP.
Going to check fuses and reset the computer to see if it makes a difference and if the 4wd High/Low lights are still flashing I'll switch out the shift motor. Two questions:
1. Does the shift motor have it's own fuse? If not what fuse is it on?
2. It's in 2wd right now - There's no chance for doing any damage to it by driving, right?

Just had the same problem with my '98 Ranger. We'd had snow, thaw, freeze and truck was hanging with icicles. 4WD hi and lo lights were flashing every few minutes while driving and 4WD was not engaging. After driving fifteen minutes then parking for an hour, 4WD worked fine with no lights flashing. I see in the Ford electrical and vacuum troubleshooting guide that those lights can be triggered by the rear anti-lock brake module and the 4 wheel anti-lock module. I wonder if some ice was disturbing one of those sensors and then melted away when the day warmed up? I replaced the transfer case shift motor as precaution.

Hi everyone, Reading this post and my problem is a little different. When i start the truck the 4WD lights up next to the speedometer, then goes off. When i turn the selector switch on to put it in to 4 wheel drive nothing happens? The selector switch does not light up? I hear the clicking from the module , the module near the passengers kick panel. I replaced the selector switch, also i replaced the transfer motor attached to the transfer case, still no 4 wheel drive or the selector switch does not light up? I unplugged both clips to the 4 x 4 module, next to the passenger kick panel and turned the ignition key and the 4WD lights next to the speedo did not light up? Any ideas??? Thanks Russ
