Don't do the mod to permanently lock your pvh hubs (unless mpgs aren't important to you) it will affect the ride and gas mileage, wear your tires and drivetrain quicker- the best mod is the one that changes the pvh hubs into manual lockers- this is what I did and my 4x4 has worked flawlessly (until I had the indicator light problem). With a few simple steps you can do it to your truck an it works great and leaves your front drivetrain completely neutral while driving on the road in 2wd which increases gas mileage and tire life etc etc.
---------
Now I am having this same problem with my truck and the 4x4 indicator flashing hi and lo, but my transfer case is in 4x4 high because when I lock my hubs im in 4x4. When I unlock them it's just like 2wd. I drove 500 miles without knowing this and it doesn't affect it's ride on the road but I can't shift into 4x4 lo or 2wd and it bugs me. Has anyone replaced shift motors or fuses and had success? Let me know!

The motor is on the back side of the transfer case. Looks like a small starter.
Each front wheel has a hub locking assembly. The hub locks are not related to the shift motor.

Re: 4X4 system not engaging
My 4x4 lights blink after I take it out of 4wd. It takes forever for them to go off. My 4x4 seems to work though but this got me thinking

Re: 4X4 system not engaging
Its good knowing that other people don't have 4x4 too lol. I'm so sick of this electric crap I'm thinking about putting a manual transfer case in.

I'm so done with electric and pvh systems... They are mistakes... If there's a mod for putting a manual transfer case in please let me know -_-

Just crawl under the truck n on the back side of the transfer case is what Looks like a windshield wiper motor...that is your actuator for the 4x4...beat the hell outta it with a wrench n hit the button for the four hi...if that don't work look behind your driver seat and there should be a plastic panel there and when u remove it it has the comp for the 4x4 system...check the connections...if they're good...the unit may be bad

Re: 4X4 system not engaging
My factory original lasted 14 years & the replacement was $90 delivered by Amazon. At that price can't see any point in screwing around with an old unit.
If the swap takes more then 15 minutes to are taking too long.

I wouldn't recommend doing this. There are 2 magnets on the inside and they are sensitive so just tap it lightly. If the magnets break your 4x4 won't work.

I can't confirm this but just a thought. The shift
Motor shouldn't move much to change the gear so replace it with a linkage and cut a hole through the bottom of the truck make a good gasket get a shift lever and boot from a 88 ranger make it look neat and have a functioning manual t case with no more electric bs. Replace the live drive of VPH with manual hubs and have the best/most reliable 4x4 system. And if you did go through with this and the blinking 4x4 lights wouldn't shut off just take the bulbs out lol.

I already bought the shift motor, I know where it is, my hubs are already manual so I just need to get the motor put on.. But in the future I might switch it over and I'd love to mess around with a manual t-case in the '99
