cigarette lighter- power outlet help!!
Hey guys I've recently discovered that even since I have a cigarette lighter doesn't mean its a power outlet. I just bought a radar detector and have no way to plug it in for power. Does anyone have a sensible solution?? Please, I don't want to have wasted my money on something I can't even use!

Does the cigarette lighter work?
I'm guessing corrosion of some sort if the lighter works but not the radar...
Does the radar have an on/off switch?
Also, you can hardwire an aftermarket cig lighter bar (comes w/ like 3 holes for them in a row) to any 12v source.

i second the extra add in socket...you can easily get them at an autoparts store and just tuck it under the kickpannel or something and plug in the radar detector so you wont see anywires..i did it to mine it loos so clean

Re: cigarette lighter- power outlet help!!
I already told you it's probably got oxidation on the metal.

Re: cigarette lighter- power outlet help!!
Most of the lighter/power ports only work when the key is in the ACC or Run position. Is yours in either position when you test your equipment? Most of the plug-in chargers also have a fuse inside that you can easily remove by unscrewing the silver tip end. Did you check those? I usually hardwire all my power port/lighters to be hot all the time. That way I always have a charger active to charge my phone/GPS when I'm away from my truck/car.

Re: cigarette lighter- power outlet help!!
Ranger lighter plugs (both of them if you have two) are on constant power circuits and do not require the key to be on. If the actual lighter heating element works but your accessories don't, than it is just like 94mtx said. Something inside the plug is bad. A flashlight looking into it will probably make it obvious.

Re: cigarette lighter- power outlet help!!
Easy, hard-wire a terminal you buy at the store into any 12v source and ground.

Re: cigarette lighter- power outlet help!!
I had the same issue in mine. Power outlet worked, but the cig lighter didn't work as a power outlet, but the heat part worked. I just wired another one up it only cost around 6 bucks and was simple to do.
