Default bad heater core can it cause the motor to over heat

I am wondering with a bad heater core if the coolant that leaks out is it possible that the coolant for the motor can drain completely out and cause the motor to over heat? I am wondering cause i am trying to give the warranty company some insensitive to cover it because i can't pay for it.
