hey. i got an '00 xlt with auto 3.0 and no tach.
does anyone know if its possible to swap out the gauge cluster for one with a tach but have the tach functional?

Yes it will work the wiring is there along with the sensors. Simple plug and play

Any gauge from 1998-2003 will work there is a how to roll your odometer back or forward when you install the new gauge

Check ebay there are tons of gauges on there. just type in ford ranger gauges

i was just wondering what years were interchangeable.

and is there any certain ones that look better than others? figure if i'm gonna do this i might as well make it look better.

98-03.

01-03 Explorer Sport and Sport Trac have italic fonts and are white faced with orange needles.
03 Ranger XLT have the same italic fonts and orange needles as the explorers, but are silver faced.
01-03 Mazda B-series are the same as all other ranger clusters, but have orange needles

All others are black faced with white needles(IMO...BORING). If I recall correctly, it'll all plug right in and work properly on all 98+ trucks. 97 and older having some wire moving I believe to operate properly.

I actually prefer the silver over the white faced. I feel the white is just too bright for me. Not 'bright' as the illumination, just the overall flow of the interior in the daytime...white was too bright for me for my tastes. On top of that, my whole project of converting the interior to all '03, it's perfect. lol.

Here's what the white faced and the silver faced gauges look like at night...it's really alot more brilliant than the other black faced or even the 04+ clusters.

i was also thinking of possibly using the nuimage overlays? has anyone used these at all? if i went this route i'd just get one with the orange needles and install the new overlays. save a few bucks on the cluster that way.

any thoughts? or is it just too much work for what its worth?

Only way you'll really get the orange needles, is by buying a cluster. All those clusters pictured that I posted, I never paid more than $40 each. Some as little as $20. eBay is your friend. Just search "ranger cluster" or "explorer cluster". Find one from the years I listed. There is a grey area: 2002+ Explorer gauges WILL NOT WORK. 01-03 Explorer Sport or Explorer Sport Trac WILL WORK. 04+ Ranger WILL NOT WORK.

Generally, overlays SUCK and look wayyyy too cheap for my tastes. Sorry to those who have them: I think they look like they belong in a ricer covered in autozone stickon 'mods'.
