In some states, I believe it's illegal to drive around with a police scanner in your vehicle unless you're an emergency responder.

With that said, as long as you have a 100+ channel scanner with the proper frequencies programmed in, you should be able to pick up some traffic.
A lot of law enforcement radios are now scrambled, trunked or use other means to defeat listening in to them.
The codes aren't that hard, once you have a list of what is what you'll know what they're talking about... if it's not scrambled.

Some of the extra security was done for privacy concerns... like when they call in someone's name, address, ssn, etc. anyone listening could easily write that info down & use it in nasty ways.

And it may not work I really don't know, I plan on mounting a battery in it somewhere.

It's illegal in ky to have one in ur car. And they are switching to digital frequencies around me.

I know they are legal here, But I'm guessing the one I was looking at for 50 bucks wouldn't be a 100 plus channel. But thanks for the info.

People arn't dumb enough to allow public scanners open and police not some how talk in code.
Or we all would be robbin banks

Very true. I don't know what Ohio law is, but I used one for a short time before it quit. I was amazed at what I heard.

Is the op talking about a radar detector or a legit police radio scanner?

Michigan Law is that anyone can have them in their vehicle now. Before it was only HAM radio operators and Emergency Service Personnel.

Another thing to check into..IDK what your state law it, but here's an exert from Michigan's penal code...

(2) A person shall not carry or have in his or her possession in the commission or attempted commission of a crime a radio receiving set that will receive signals sent on a frequency assigned by the federal communications commission of the United States for police or other law enforcement, fire fighting, emergency medical, federal, state, or local corrections, or homeland security purposes. A person who violates this subsection is guilty of a crime as follows:

(a) If this subsection is violated in the commission or attempted commission of a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of at least 93 days but less than 1 year, the person is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both.

(b) If this subsection is violated in the commission or attempted commission of a misdemeanor or felony punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of 1 year or more, the person is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 2 years or a fine of not more than $2,000.00, or both.

A police scanner ain't gonna help you know where the cops are. Most PD's used digital and trunked frequencies and you probably won't be able to pick those up. You'd be better off with a Radar Detector. And even that route, chances are you will still get caught.

Best way to not get caught.......don't do something that you shouldn't be doing.
