I have a 97 automatic transmission w/o a tach, will the tach work if I just swap in a cluster that has one?

if you read the article it tells you why you would need to roll the odometer (also its just common logic). It would be to make a new guage cluster match the correct mileage of the truck.
My truck read 129k miles. The replacement cluster reads 151k Miles. Hence rolling the odometer to the correct 129k would make sense. Leaving it at 151k would logically be illegal because it would not be correct. So you see we are not criminals trying to dupe the next owner after all.

so since my odometer just stopped working and I need to replace it, what should be done?? I dont understand why its a crime to get a replacement odometer and make it the correct miles... am I missing something here? Does it have to be done and certified at a Dealer or something?

Not that it even matters because here in florida vehicles over 10 years old become exempt from stating mileage on the title, but I still want my truck to show the "correct" mileage so that maintenance can be done at proper intervals.

Not a crime

Would be a crime if he installed a cluster with less miles and didn't roll it forward
Only a crime when you roll it back to sell a vehicle

Altering the mileage reading on a motor vehicle is a felony. Effective July 5, 1994, the odometer tampering statutes were recodified from Title 15, U.S.C., to Title 49. The change was not substantive, though the statutes were reworded. Some of the old and new statutes are: * Tampering prohibition: moved from 15 U.S.C. 1984 to 49 U.S.C. 32703(2).
* False odometer statement prohibition: moved from 15 U.S.C. 1988 to 49 U.S.C. 32705(a)(2).
* Odometer fraud conspiracy prohibition: moved from 15 U.S.C. 1986 to 49 U.S.C. 32703(4).
* Criminal penalty provision: moved from 15 U.S.C. 1990c to 49 U.S.C. 32709(b).
