Default cruise control

hi, I have a 2003 Ford Ranger Edge, it has no cruise control, I go to college about 2 hours away from my job, I also have a 2000 Ford Explorer with cruise control, I know their engines are very similar, would it be possible for me to take out all the cruise control (servo, switches, etc) out of the explorer and put it in the ranger, or do they not go together?

Thanks

Hunter

it would be a bitch. there was a member on here who did it, i think his name is 4evermodding or something like that. looked like a complete and total pain in the ass.

what i do is just wedge my foot into the trans tunnel so that it presses on the gas still. bit different at first, but it's free.

I think its totally possible.

FIrst off do you have power windows/locks......from most vehicles I've seen with those options you may be prewired for cruise.......ford just never installed the cruise components. If thats the case you maybe in bussiness.

Look behind your coolant reservoir and in front of your air box to see if there is likea 8-10 wire connector just attached to the inner fender. If you got that you are golden.

I know a guy who did it on a '99 I think it was... I think the computer issues are the hardest part of the process.

Computer issues? The system is almost totally independent. The only thing it needs from the computer is the speed signal.

The way I added cruise to mine was swapping out engine bay and dash harnesses. THis also allowed me to add power doors.

Go Vols! (now back to talking about cruise control).

Incidentally I am in the process of fixing my cruise control in my03 xlt. I'm subscribing as this may turn up with some beneficial info.

Something about the ECM didn't gel with it but it could have been an isolated thing.

One thing your gonna have to do is possibly get a new cable that goes to the throttle body....unless the explorer is a 4.0 and you have a 4.0. The cable is engine specific.

Then you got to replace the clockspring and wiring. Replace buttons. and then the wiring.

OG/LB speed control indicator lamp ground (goes to instrument cluster to activate "speed cont" light

GY/BK Vehicle speed sensor

TN/LB Brake Pedal Position Switch (to deactivate when you hit the brakes)

LB/BK and DB/OG wires to the clockspring wiring for the switches

GY/YE Ignition source

BK/YE Brake pressure switch (goes to switch on master cylinder, you probably don't have it so I would just splice that to the GY/YE wire)

BK ground

Looks like your gonna have to wire everything up yourself then. Its not too bad of a job, if you know what you are doing. The best way to do it is to actually remove both the dash harness and engine bay harness from the explorer and remove the wires for the system and repin those to your harness. Very time consuming but looks 10x better and feels better knowing that no wire has been cut.

I actually thought about doing all this wiring but I decided to wait till I got a harnesses from another ranger that had all these options. I ended up dropping about 150 bucks and got power windows/locks, cruise. Plus a tilt steering column. The best way to save money on these parts is to wait and wait for the best deal. Took me about a year but I'm very happy with the results.....except for the hole in my door panel for the old crank handle.

Bringing the dead back to life.
I am in the process of installing a cruise on my 2000 xlt. Everything is done but I have an issue.
I THINK I am splicing the two correct wires. But when I do, the speedo stops workings, the abs lights come on, and the trans will not leave first gear.
Sooo, I must have something wrong.
Are these the correct wires to splice with a 2 amp fuse? IF not, what wires shoud I be looking for? By the master cyliner right?
Also, the thread I read said make sure there is a fuse in 7, 10 and 13. I have a fuse in 10 and 13. But 7 cannot take a fuse because there is not metal contacts inside the fuse holder spot.
Is that a problem??
