Default diesel starting probs

I have a 2003 B2500 diesel extended cab. Starter turns engine OK, but does not start. A small squirt of easy start gets it going, and from then all OK and drives well. If I stop the engine, it will restart within a couple of minutes, but requires a lot of turning. after that it will not start at all. Filter is new and tank full. I suspect some sort of electronic sensor prob. Any ideas? The pickup has done 146000 miles, and has never given trouble until now. Jim.

idk if this will work but before you crank it over, leave the key in the "ON" postion for a few seconds and then start it. maybe to prime the pump up a bit

Thanks, but I've tried all that was suggested plus I fitted a pump prior to the filter that provided all the pressure you could want, even blew a connector, but still no start! I should have said it is actually a Mazda I have, but I'm fairly certain it is just a Ranger at heart.

Im willing to guess its a glow plug issue since you state it will start hot..but not cold without ether. Either glow plug controller, or glowpug(s). Fuel filters on diesels like to be changed every 10-15k miles. check air filter too. Sometimes just basic stuff can cause issues.

what engine does it has?

The Maxxion 2.5? You may need to check the compression. The maxxion is know for low durability, arround 120-150.000 kms.

I would:

a- check compression
b- check pump
c- check heater serpentine

Thanks guys, it turned out to be a total glow-plug failure. With the temps we have been having lately I never gave the glow plugs a thought, but apparently this engine as it is direct injection needs the plugs for the first start always. Live and learn.
