Question A/C mystery

My a/c compressor continually cycles on and off unless the selector dial is in the offf position or the dash vent position. This happens even when i select warm air on the floor. Any ideas?

Compressor operation in most modes is "normal" for Rangers.

AC compressor operation allowed:
Max AC
AC
Vent/Floor
Floor/Defrost
Defrost

AC compressor operation not allowed:
Vent only
Floor only
Off

If desired, it is possible to add a dash switch to disable compressor operation. The purple wire from the back of the HVAC control panel tells the PCM when it should allow compressor operation. Interrupting that wire with an on/off switch would allow the compressor to be turned off in any position of the HVAC mode selector dial.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Side note: If compressor cycling frequency is higher than usual, that could mean a low refrigerant charge.
And the temperature knob has no bearing on AC operation. Also FYI, when you set it for OFF or MAX AC, a valve closes on hot water line to the heater core.
pretty darn sure I just bought this truck mentioned used from the previous poster!!!
Funny thing is, in searching for information on this problem - I was lead to this post.
First off, he took tremendous care of the truck - and it is in superb condition. So kudos for that!
Main point for posting, the A/C issue is still standing. After a recent trip to local lube place whom flushed the atf, I asked if they wouldn't mind checking the pressure in the refrigeration system. They noted it was low - but not really needing a refill.
What I am wondering is, would it be a good idea to go ahead and get this serviced and refilled? It still has the same problem of hard starts with the clutch on the compressor. As if there is extra work needed to get the unit running.
I would like to make repairs while still repairable - rather then possibly break something major by waiting on it.
Thoughts, advice?
Thanks!
As has been said, the AC is supposed to run in all settings except panel only and floor only. So what is the problem you're having??
FYI, you can buy the recharge-in-a-can at any autopart store and do it yourself in about 3 minutes.
The problem is it cycles often. Aprox once every 48 sec. (on-48sec,off-48sec,on-48sec, ect.)
I suppose I will go out and pickup one of these 'kits'.
Are whats usually included enough to prevent over fill (gauges) ?
Also, is it a pretty simple process?
It's a can with a hose, nozzle, and gauge. Looks like a fancy can of fix-a-flat. Trust me, my mother could figure it out, and she can barely figure out the TV remote.
Once you have it refilled, see what happens. It's really not worth guessing or throwing darts in the dark until that obvious problem is fixed.
Could the accumulator, orfice tube or the condensor be clogged with stuff?
Took advice, $39 got me a hose, two cans, and gauge.
Refilled as instructions but somewhat stumped.
Situation:
The compressor stays on longer - and dose not cycle near/at all as often.
Yet, when testing the psi with included gauge - it reads about 10 lb. below the dials recommended range while the compressor is running. It wont refill anymore either - ie> not accepting any more gas (used about 1/2-3/4 of one can).
Then when the compressor kicks off (not filling) the pressure move into the red zone, saying hazard as overfull!
This would be due to the compressor not running, and not be of concern? Or does this indicate some other error?
I am riffling through the forums postings on recharge guides - so bear with a tinkerers ignorance.
Thanks.
