I always carry a fire extinguisher, tow strap and shackle, Leatherman Wave, and a small First Aid kit in my truck. I had a real eye-opener a few years back--we were driving to NC and we came upon a Chevy full-size practically burning to the ground on the side of the interstate. Luckily people had stopped to help them before we got there, but as we passed, I said to my wife, "You know, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have at least a fire extinguisher in the truck!" I've carried one ever since.

the reason i harp on the having a window punch/ hammer is because of an experience i had trying to break a window of a car that was submerged with the hitch out of my buddys truck. a group of us were driving down a rural dirt road that had water on both sides of it late one night and we noticed headlights pointing up towards the road from under the water. the water was still swirling so we knew the car had just gone in. not knowing whether or not anyone was in the car myself and another friend jumped in the water (which couldnt have been more than 45 degrees) to try and see if anyone was in the car and all 4 doors were locked so we knew we had to try and break a window to get in the car. the only thing my friend had in his truck was the hitch draw bar and ball so i grabbed that and jumped in, i kneeled on the roof of the car with water up to my chest and swung that hitch with both hands as hard as possible at the passenger side glass, it took probably 20 swings before the glass finally broke and i was able to get into the car after cutting my arms pretty bad on the glass when the hitch finally went through. thankfully no one was in the car and we found out later from the sheriff that a drunk that had just left the bar lost it and the car went in and he got out just in time and he walked home, he was charged with drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless endangerment because of the risks that were taken by us to make sure no one was in the car. it was still a valuable lesson learned for all of us and that was to try and be better prepared for situations like that. If you live in a state like michigan that is full of rivers, lakes and large ponds the chances of a situation like this happening is pretty good and its good to be prepared and i cant stress that enough.

Considering a guy just got sued up here for helping a lady get out of her car after an accident and he supposedly twisted her ankle, I got a cell phone. I'd be happy to help somebody if their life wasn't in immediate danger, but if they are able to wait inside the car until medical personnel arrive, then that's where they will stay.

On a side note, when I got in my accident when I was 16, I didn't have a cell phone, and the first person on the scene was a family from Canadadadada. I asked if we could use his cell phone, but he said no because it would be an international call since it was a Canadiananananan cell phone plan. I seriously wanted to punch the guy. Luckily the next person on scene wasn't a complete douche bag, and they called for us.

That's true but remember that they did that test as a separate experiment using just a door submerged in a glass tank to rule out electronic failure as the reason power windows would fail to open. They didn't fail to operate underwater in the tank.

But when they submerged a car underwater, the windows would not open until they used a center punch, or waited until the cab filled with water. This time because of the pressure difference.

Agreed. I too was in an accident when I was 16. I was lucky though and had a cell phone. Alot of people passed by, but finally a really nice lady in a Camaro pulled over to see if I was alright. She asked me if she could get me anything, I told her no, but she insisted, so she ran over to the nearby gas station, got me a Pepsi and brought it back, and waited with me until the EMTs arrived. She too called the authorities herself just to make sure someone was coming. I got real lucky that night.

That's basically my method. A cell phone and some calm reassurance. Either that or I mind my business.

Unless the incident involves an animal that got it's hip smashed and it's flopping around panicking. THEN I start wishing I carry a gun.

I have to laugh a bit, sorry, but when I was 17 and put my 72 ford courier in a irrigation canal, cell phones were not invented yet.
But luckily there was a farmer discing a field and came over to check on us. Yep, I had my girlfriend and we were ditching school to go to the delta and swim. Unbeknown to us that day that we would ditch it while ditching.
My father was the least of my worries at this point, it was her father and my funeral that was occupying my thoughts.
Carry on.
