95~97 Rangers use a signal generator on the transmission or transfer case to provide the square wave to operate the speedometer which in turn drives the odometer. If the SG or its circuitry fail, neither the speedometer nor the odometer would work.

If the speedometer works but the odometer does not, it usually means that the gear drive between them in the speedo head has failed. I don't think that there are any new repair parts available for this problem. The fix is a replacement speedo head or complete cluster.

A junkyard but chances are they will want to sell you a complete cluster. It varies a lot but $50 might be a typical price.

Here is a cheap one on ebay

Gauge Cluster

Also search ebay for 95 to 03 ranger....explorer...sport tracs direct plug-n-play

You can get the all white ones from the ranger that were from 01-03 or the silver ones that came in sport tracs

Na. They were ether black or silver. I don't know what models came with the silver gauges. I want to say XLT's but I have seen them in a FX4, but they could have swapped in.

95-02 ALL had black faces.
03 XL and Edge had black faces.
03 XLT got silver faces and the cool italic font(same exact gauges as the White face Explorer Sport/Sport Trac with orange needles, but instead of white faces, they're silver) .
04+ XL/XLT got black faces and black trim ring.
04+ Fx4 LII got black faces and silver trim ring.
04+ Edge/Sport got white faces and black trim ring.

Hope that settles some issues....

ANYWAY....

Swat784.....click the link below. It's a how-to I wrote up for gauge swappers. Everything you'd need to know about swapping that drive motor can be found in that thread. It covers alot of gauge swappers concerns. Enjoy and be careful...

Let me add one more bit of info to watch out for.

The white and silver clusters of the 2001~2003 Sport/Sport Trac and 2003 XLT Ranger came in different 4WD and 2WD versions (with and without the 4x4 indicator cutouts and bulbs).

The black clusters were all the same 4x4 style because the dark 4x4 cutouts were nearly invisible when installed in 2WD Rangers.

Very good point, Bob. I know the expo white faces always have cruise, but some ranger silver faces don't(due to option packages). Another to add to the list.

The same point can be said for the 04+ clusters as well....namely the 4x4, fog light, cruise, and tpms indicators in the driver information center(vary year to year, trim pkg to trim pkg). Some you can see where the indicator is but nearly invisible, but underneeth there's no LED to light the indicator up. I'm fuzzy on the tiny details of 04+, but I did tear into an 05 and it has the TPMS indicator, just to bulb.
