Default tap into dome light

I know this has been covered a million times, and I've read a bunch of threads here, and on other sites, but...

i can't figure out how to tap into the power line for the dome light. I have some led strips that i'm going to use as footwell lights, and want them to come on when the door is opened, off when closed, etc. I've read that its the blue/black wire in the passenger kick panel, but tapping into that, my lights get no power. any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong???

yeah, I am grounding them, and I know the lights work by testing them with the cigarette lighter wiring.

sweeet, just the other day i was saying it would be cool to have door operated LED strips to illuminate the running boards.. Too bad these could go on the outside of the door

on their website, they have pictures of people mounting them on the bottom of the actual door, so they light up the ground when you open it. they also sell some waterproof ones i think.

figured some pictures might help. this one shows the wire I tried tapping into, black w/ blue stripe, as previously mentioned.

This one shows the whole kick panel with the cover removed. there are more black/blue wires in the upper half of the harness above the big black connector and where I already cut. but I assume its all the same, correct?

Hopefully someone who has done this before, or someone that knows electronics can help me out, it shouldn't have taken this long to still have nothing done.

I went a totally different route for my under dash led strips...

I simply tied into the wires AT the dome light (actually I soldered onto the switch contacts, but that's a different story) and ran my wires down the pillar behind the door, along the floor under my explorer center console. From there I wired everything up inside the console so if I ever want to change things up, I have easy access.

You could use a similar method, but use a voltmeter or test light to figure out which of the dome light wires is hot all the time & which is controlled by the door switches.
